This book brought out every emotion in the spectrum.
By Michelle Ford Copley
I LOVE this series! I don't know, I think Kenyon is magic...She can take the most hated character in a series and in the space of less than 800 pages make them one of your favorite characters. Jullien was a character that I loved to hate, but like in her other series (Dark Hunter) that one character that makes you want to strangle-- settles right into your heart. She is a master at this and I find I must read everything she puts in print. Jullien and Ushara are amazing together and Ushara is the perfect mate for this broken male. Ushara is no sissy, she is a VERY strong female, in a world that has a strong matriarchal presence. It took me 4 good days to get through this book and I am a fairly quick reader. My reading time is at a premium anymore. I laughed, I cried, I felt the emotions strongly from these characters. She also introduced us to more characters I am looking forward to getting to know and of course we got to see some of the old characters though not nearly as much as in some of her past books in this series. Jullien was the twin to another hero in this series, Nyk. Throughout the series we saw a LOT of reasons to hate Jullien but with this addition we see behind the scenes and see why he was the way he was. We get to know the relationship between he and his family and it is pretty horrific. There could be triggers in this book if you are sensitive. I can not recommend this book highly enough and will be doing another read of it in a week or so. It was just that darn good. I am looking forward to her next release which I think is in August, so I will probably re read that series again to prepare for it. The male characters in her series are serious Alpha males but they can be tender with those they care deeply for. I found myself cheering for Jullien's every triumph. There are only 2 authors I get this attached to the characters in their books and Kenyon is definitely one.

SIX STARS and my favorite Kenyon ever
By Christina Wilson
Can I give a book SIX stars?
Sherrilyn Kenyon's League series has long been my favorite of all her series. When I heard she was expanding the original trilogy, I was SO excited and happy. And most of those books have lived up to my expectations, earning 4 or 5 stars in my mental rating system. This book, however - If I could give it a 6-star review, I would. In fact, it just might have knocked the original trio off the top as my favorite (not sure, I'll have to re-read the entire series to be sure :-) )
I find there are often three main themes running through Ms. Kenyon's work: 1) every being (human or otherwise) has flaws, 2) there are always at least two sides to every story, and 3) no one is beyond forgiveness and redemption. In this book, I believe she fully illustrates all three themes better than in any of her others (even the Acheron/Styx twin series from the Dark Hunter series).
Firstly, the characters in this series are a product of the environment and times they inhabit - a BRUTAL, violent world where assassination and death are common and frequent. Honor, true friendship, trust, and loyalty are rare. Supposed friends will sell each other out for the right price. Even families can't trust each other - especially among the higher echelons of power, and they don't hesitate to wipe each other out for gain. Parents often don't like their children, and vice versa, and child abuse - it happens and mostly, no one bats an eye or cares. You have to understand that to understand how parents could so love one child and so horribly mistreat another. Favored children are pampered and spoiled, un-favored children are lucky to be alive.
Each of Ms. Kenyon's books makes a "superhero" of the main character. The story within those pages is about that character, and events within the timeline of the book are from their POV. Born of Legend is the "twin" counterpart to the very FIRST book in the League series, Born of Night. In BON, Nykarian (Jullien's twin) was the superhero. And what a superhero he was! He was everyone's white knight, dressed in black, riding in the save the day. Of course, he had his flaws, but they were relatively few and easily forgivable. His family, including Jullien, played a truly horrible role in his story, abusing and torturing him, kidnapping his wife, etc. At the end of the book, however, we discover his parents were not to blame for their supposed actions and were exonerated of any wrong-doing, all is forgiven, and he goes on to become heir to TWO kingdoms. But not Jullien - he is disinherited, disowned, exiled and then his character disappears and is largely forgotten except as an occasional footnote to mention what a horrible, terrible, no good, very bad person he is/was. This theme of Nyk as hero continues through most of the ensuing novels in the series. Some protagonist does something terrible to the hero or love interest in the book, and eventually Nyk and/or his ever growing band of allies rides in at the end to aid in the rescue. (Yes, I do realize that's not JUST a writer's ploy to tie the novels together, but because loyal readers actually expect to "visit" the characters in the series to see what they're up to.)
In Born of Legend, we at last get to find out what happened to one of the most disliked characters in the League universe - Nik's twin brother Jullien. We get to hear HIS side of the story - HIS motivation for his horrible actions in Born of Night. And like in many of Ms. Kenyon's novels, we discover Jullien's world was not "wine-and-roses", as expected. Jullien is absolutely a flawed character and he absolutely owns up to those flaws, sometimes to his detriment, leading to self-loathing, hasty action, and self-harm. In Born of Legend, we experience his redemption story from hitting absolute rock bottom and near death to self-redemption, forgiving himself, shaking off his past and finally accepting the life he has built for himself, without looking back.
And yes, Nyk, our previously "perfect" superhero, is knocked a bit askew on his pedestal. We discover he is perhaps not himself without flaws. Great assassin? Absolutely. Great ruler? Ummm, not yet. That takes a knowledge and understanding of politics and diplomacy, and neither are found at the end of a blaster. Those will take some time to develop. And Kiara? Great mom, yes, but the years haven't made her any calmer or more level-headed in an emergency. And hearing someone else's description of both characters was... eye-opening.
By the course of the book, we see no one is beyond redemption and forgiveness (and if others can't find that forgiveness yet, that's their damage). His character, too, is a person worthy of admiration, rather than any carry-over dislike you might have expected at the start of the book.

The Best of the Series!

Maybe not extreme spoilers but things of definite note.
Born of Legend is Book 9 in the amazing Sherrilyn Kenyon's League Series. In many ways it has leap frogged to the top of my favorite Kenyon Series. Maybe because it remains true to the beginning.. and maybe because it's just that good.
We all know you can't have a Kenyon hero without him having a tortured soul, it's just not possible. Each hero has to overcome some pretty nasty stuff. And on occasion (Styxx) he also has to overcome our preconceived notions. Yep, Sherrie manages to redeem the unredeemable. I bring that up because Born of Legend also redeems the unredeemable. Julian En Anatole.. And it was an amazing ride. This time, Sherrie gets it near perfect! In Styxx it was almost overkill and Zanax was definitely required and there were times when I hated Ash.. yeah not goo. But This time... It was less overkill and more emotional. More an adult who has to deal with the remnants of an abusive childhood, both physical and emotional. A child who was neglected, drugged and turned into the scapegoat of a nation. But Julian, AKA Dagger, rose above it all. Became the man he dreamed of being. Was he perfect? Nope...
We start Born of Legend when Julian was on his last hope, he was determined to die and he decided to do so by saving a child. That one action truly changed his life. Introduced him to the woman who became his "Darling Star" his guiding light, his very reason for being. And in turn helped him to overcome a dark and desperate past to be the man he dreamed of. But more than that, he became a true legend.
Ushara is Trivali, a race hammered together of outlaws with a code. She is the second in command and pretty much has it all. Has it all until her son is kidnapped and she is desperate to find him, to save him. What she finds is a stranger willing to give his life for her child. A Stranger broken in heart and body but still willing to save a child. How can Ushara NOT fall for this guy. As she begins to realize just who he is, she knows she should encourage him to move on, to start over somewhere else. I mean his family pretty much destroyed her entire race.. ooops. But she can't she keeps seeing the man behind the mask.
Ushara has the strength and fortitude that no one in Julian's life has ever had AND she believes in him. He is not perfect and he's most definitely a work in progress. That and he always puts the family that left him first. Kind of irksome but as I said, Julian evolves. He creates his own family. He becomes a hero, a legend to his new people. And when it comes time to save the family of his past he goes and faces those demons as well.
And there were some serious cheer moments.. Like when Mama dearest tries to claim him as her son and she is totally slapped down by the woman who has adopted him into her lineage.. Or when Thraix (a friend) wants to know where Julian gets his intelligence because it obviously wasn't from anyone in his side of the family. A total slap down.. Brilliantly done.
What I really enjoyed is that we don't have to hate Nykerian.. Julian did some pretty crappy stuff to him in the past but Nyk understands that there were circumstances.. BUT.. happily ever after? BFF's?
This was a story of redemption, personal redemption and finding your own place in the world. Not living up to or down to the expectations of others but living your own life. Your own dreams and becoming the person you want to be.
Just wonderful!
