"This is an outstanding text on computer organization compared to what we have today. This text has several aspects that are very important for undergraduates and unique compared to existing texts, including i) required level of emphasis on I/O and buses (instead of focusing only on processor, cache and memory), ii) in-depth discussion on memory as well as disk technology, iii) use of ARM ISA as a vehicle, and iv) making the practical connection of architecture with application domains including multimedia and compression. On one hand this book provides lot of interesting and required insights. On the other hand, it makes interesting for readers to understand the link between computer organization and real-world applications."

About the Author
Alan Clements studied Electronics at the University of Sussex. He was awarded a Ph.D. at Loughborough University in equalizers for digital data transmission in 1976. During the 1970s when literature on microcomputer design was comparatively rare, Dr. Clements wrote one of the first books in this area, The Principles of Computer Hardware. It was one of the first undergraduate texts to cover the whole spectrum of computer hardware at an introductory level, with topics ranging from Boolean algebra to peripherals that measure rotational velocity. In the 1980s Dr. Clements wrote a definitive text on microprocessor systems design which featured Motorola processors. Motorola honored Dr. Clements by endowing him with a personal chair at Teesside. Following his earlier successes Dr. Clements has become increasingly interested in the problems of teaching computer architecture and involved with education. In 2001 he became chair of the Computer Society's international student competition, CSIDC and in the same year received a National Teaching Fellowship in the UK, the UK's highest award for higher education. In 2009 he was elected Fellow of the IEEE for contributions to computer science education and became also became second Vice President of the IEEE Computer Society. Dr. Clements is the recipient of the 2002 Computer Science Engineering Undergraduate Teaching Award (IEEE CS) for teaching excellence reflected on textbooks with major impact on computer architecture education as well is the 2007 Taylor L. Booth award recipient for outstanding contributions to education in the field of computer architecture.

Good book, but missing helpful study tools.

This is a good book. It has a ton of information, maybe too much information. I had to use this book for one of my CS classes. The content of the book was great, but there were a few issues with the book, which is why I only gave it 4 stars. First, many of the chapters are massive. Some of the chapters are approaching 100 pages, and they are jam-packed with information. I have been a straight-A student in Computer Science since 2008, but I still found this book hard to follow at times, because there was too much information packed into each chapter.

However, the two main problems that I had with this book, is that the index is almost useless. I use the indices of textbooks religiously. I need to be able to quickly look up information, especially, when a book is this jam-packed with information. The chapters are too large to quickly scan them and find some information; however, the index never worked for me. None of the topics that we needed in my class were included in the index, even though the book covered those topics. I found myself forever flipping through the book trying to find the information I needed. I wasted so much time.

On top of that, this book has no glossary. In my opinion, that is also a huge oversight. I need the glossary so I can quickly look up terms and find the definition of things. I found it very hard to study with this book, because I wasn't able to find my way around it very easily. Topics are split up through multiple chapters and I never had any idea where I was at, or where I needed to look to find information.

If the author is reading this, and plans on writing a second edition, make sure to include a glossary, at the very least. It would also be nice to have a way to quickly look up instructions. What if I needed to quickly look up MVN or STRB to see what it meant? There is no way to do that with this book. I am left flipping page after page until I get lucky and find the instructions, or I have to abandon the textbook and start looking online, which defeats the purpose of me paying for such a high-priced book. All of the information in text books today can be found online. One of the advantages I like about textbooks, is that they help organize the information you require, so it can be easily located. This book failed to do that.

Overall, I am still giving it 4 stars, because there is a ton of good information in this book. It is loaded with code examples, diagrams and other resources to help you understand the topics. I can tell someone put a lot of hard work into writing this book, they just slipped on a few important tools, like a usable index and glossary.

This book is clearly written by academics for academia. The author seems to be a bit rough an unapologetic about it. I am sure there are better books and authors out there for this material, but if this is the book you are assigned, you have to make due with what you are given.

I wrote the original edition of Effective C++ in 1991. When the time came for a second edition in 1997, I updated the material in important ways, but, because I didn’t want to confuse readers familiar with the first edition, I did my best to retain the existing structure: 48 of the original 50 Item titles remained essentially unchanged. If the book were a house, the second edition was the equivalent of freshening things up by replacing carpets, paint, and light fixtures.

For the third edition, I tore the place down to the studs. (There were times I wished I’d gone all the way to the foundation.) The world of C++ has undergone enormous change since 1991, and the goal of this book — to identify the most important C++ programming guidelines in a small, readable package — was no longer served by the Items I’d established nearly 15 years earlier. In 1991, it was reasonable to assume that C++ programmers came from a C background. Now, programmers moving to C++ are just as likely to come from Java or C#. In 1991, inheritance and object-oriented programming were new to most programmers. Now they’re well-established concepts, and exceptions, templates, and generic programming are the areas where people need more guidance. In 1991, nobody had heard of design patterns. Now it’s hard to discuss software systems without referring to them. In 1991, work had just begun on a formal standard for C++. Now that standard is eight years old, and work has begun on the next version.

To address these changes, I wiped the slate as clean as I could and asked myself, “What are the most important pieces of advice for practicing C++ programmers in 2005?” The result is the set of Items in this new edition. The book has new chapters on resource management and on programming with templates. In fact, template concerns are woven throughout the text, because they affect almost everything in C++. The book also includes new material on programming in the presence of exceptions, on applying design patterns, and on using the new TR1 library facilities. (TR1 is described in Item54.) It acknowledges that techniques and approaches that work well in single-threaded systems may not be appropriate in multithreaded systems. Well over half the material in the book is new. However, most of the fundamental information in the second edition continues to be important, so I found a way to retain it in one form or another. (You’ll find a mapping between the second and third edition Items in Appendix B.)

I’ve worked hard to make this book as good as I can, but I have no illusions that it’s perfect. If you feel that some of the Items in this book are inappropriate as general advice; that there is a better way to accomplish a task examined in the book; or that one or more of the technical discussions is unclear, incomplete, or misleading, please tell me. If you find an error of any kind — technical, grammatical, typographical, whatever — please tell me that, too. I’ll gladly add to the acknowledgments in later printings the name of the first person to bring each problem to my attention.

Even with the number of Items expanded to 55, the set of guidelines in this book is far from exhaustive. But coming up with good rules — ones that apply to almost all applications almost all the time — is harder than it might seem. Third Edition: Improving an already great book

How do you improve a book that has been known as a "bible" in the C++ community for years? As Scott mentions at the beginning of the text, he almost threw everything out, and started from scratch. When I first say the book, I thought that there are five new items that were added to the book, but I couldn't be more wrong. As you might have guessed, C++ has gone thru a number of significant changes over the past decade, and the third edition of this book is updated to take advantage of the new editions to the C++ standard. In reality, almost every item in this book has gone thru a re-write. Many have been consolidated and new chapters, topics and many new items have been added. A few items that did not make sense anymore like items 2, 3 and 4 in the second edition are removed from this third edition.

Scott breaks down the c++ language into 4 subparts:

* The old C subsystem. Before all these advanced programming languages such as Java and .NET came, C was the language of choice. C++ is "translated" to C first, and then complied and linked to an executable.

* OO C++, which is C with Classes. This is where the concept of Object Orientation in C++ started. Even though this concept was very much new a decade ago, it is very much part of a programmer's vocabulary.

* Template C++, which is the newest edition to the C++ standard and it brings with it the concept of Template Metaprogramming. This concept is very much new, and this book has dedicated a whole chapter around templates, and template metaprogramming.

* STL, which is the C++ Standard Template Library. Again, STL was a new concept a few years back, but it is very much an established notion in C++.

Scott has taken a new approach to this book and has covered all four of these subparts. He has a book dedicated to STL, but he is using STL notions and "language" throughout this book. The chances are that the reader is already familiar with other languages such as Java and .Net, so the text covers area where these two languages differ with C++, especially in the area of inheritance and polymorphism. But not everything has changed. Topics such as,"Explicitly disallow the use of Compiler Generated functions you do not want," will never get old or outdated.

New chapters cover topics such as C++ Template and Generic Programming, Resource Allocation and topics that cover the latest C++ standard and additions, including the TR1 (Technical Report 1). "new and delete" have been separated into their own chapter, and the author goes into great depth demonstrating to the reader the various ways that these two operators can be modified, and why.

Exceptions and programming in light of exceptions is also a very new concept in C++. The previous versions on this text did not touch on exceptions all that much, but the author has spread the use of exceptions throughout the text, with a number of items dedicated explicitly to exceptions and exceptions handling.

The updated items, new topics and chapters and a new look and feel of the text with color coded examples make this book a joy to for C++ programmer to read.

Age brings wisdom...

"Effective C++: 55 Specific Ways to Improve Your Programs and Designs" recently came out in its 3rd edition. The first came out in 1991, making this line of book revisions positively ancient in high tech terms. But you should consider the elapsed 14 years an investment in wisdom, not obsolescence. Unlike the 2nd edition, this is a complete rewrite from the ground up. More than that, Scott Meyers begins from first principles, reevaluating what topics are most important to the programmers of 2005.

This was a very strategic and insightful move. Not only has the language evolved over that time, but the audience has too. In the first edition, the likely readers were coming from languages like C. Now the likely readers cross over from some other object-orient language, like Java or C#. Keep in mind

that the author focuses strictly on standard C++; he does not address anything that is platform-specific.

Like its predecessors, the items can be read stand-alone, and he does cross reference related items. The 55 items are grouped into the following chapters:

Chapter 1: Accustoming Yourself to C++

Chapter 2: Constructors, Destructors, and Assignment Operators

Chapter 3: Resource Management

Chapter 4: Designs and Declarations

Chapter 5: Inheritance

Chapter 6: Implementations and Object-Oriented Design

Chapter 7: Templates and Generic Programming

Chapter 8: Customizing new and delete

Chapter 9: Miscellany

I would hate to have to learn the lessons in this book by hard experience. It would be costly in time and unfortunately might even cover more than one employment span.

Most decisions that are undertaken by developers should consider ROI (return on investment), which always is measured in terms of time. For developers considering professional education material like this, the measure should be in terms of how many mistakes could be avoided before the book pays for itself. In this case, the ROI is probably less than 2 defects.

He has authored more than thirty books and is one of the foremost Western experts on aikido, holding a ranking of 7th dan Aikikai. Stevens has also studied calligraphy for decades, authoring the classic Sacred Calligraphy of the East. Incredible Inspiration

If you are ever dragging to get out for your morning run...the marathon monks will guilt you into calling in sick so you can run all day. This is absolutely one of the single most amazing books I've ever read, and even if it were fiction, it would be incredible.

No word can ever describe the emotions you will live in the reading of this book. It is sad that no one cared to mention that John Stevens,(the author) is himself a Marathon Monk. (I finished translating this book into French, in 1991)

These monks are so inspirational any person facing hardship should read this book to give some perspective to life.
After running for 2 years you finally get to wear your rain hat-- if a monk fails to finish his run-- he is supposed to kill himself.

These little books are great. Small enough to fit in a purse or briefcase, ..any page you open the book is a fun idea. I gave some of my "stressed out" friends a copy of this book for Christmas and it really made a hit.

This has been the most uplifting little book I've put my hands on in years. So, great that I've purchased about 20 of these over the past 4 years to give as gifts for birthday, new job, new home, Christmas, etc. Every time I pick it up, I find something new and great to think about and share. About the Author

CAROLYN LUDWIG is the author of Jewels in Our Crown: Churches of Los Angeles (2003) and editor of The Churches of Egypt (AUC Press, 2007). She lives in Los Angeles and is a frequent visitor to Egypt.

SHERIF SONBOL is a highly regarded Egyptian photographer. He has contributed photographs to numerous illustrated books, including The Churches of Egypt (AUC Press, 2008) and The Nile Cruise (AUC Press, 2010).

GAWDAT GABRA is the former director of the Coptic Museum and the author, coauthor, or editor of numerous books on the history and culture of Egyptian Christianity, including The Treasures of Coptic Art (AUC Press, 2006) and The Churches of Egypt (AUC Press, 2007). He is currently visiting professor of Coptic studies at Claremont Graduate University, California.


GERTRUD J.M. VAN LOON specializes in Coptic art and archaeology. She holds a PhD from Leiden University. She is currently a fellow at the Catholic University of Leuven in Belgium. She is the coauthor of The Churches of Egypt (AUC Press, 2007).


STEFAN REIF is professor emeritus of medieval Hebrew studies and fellow of St John's College at the University of Cambridge. He is the author of many books and articles, including most recently A Jewish Archive from Old Cairo, Problems with Prayers, and Charles Taylor and the Genizah Collection.


TAREK SWELIM earned his PhD in Islamic art and architecture from Harvard University. Excellent Volume That Masterfully Combines the Academic and Pictorial

This is an excellent volume from a diversity of religious scholars, art historians, and archaeologists with a combined dozens of years of experience working in the region. I came to this volume as a student in Coptic Studies but what makes this volume unique is that it is relevant for a much broader audience because Old Cairo is a microcosm of the complexities of Egyptian history as seen through one region's diverse religious history. Also notable is that this volume is not merely academic. It is certainly scholarly but it combines this with superb photographs to provide the reader a visual experience as well that is unique and commendable for a university press publication. I fully recommend this volume to students of Egyptian religious history, Coptic scholarship, and art and archaeology.

It is also the second best thing for those who cannot adventure as tourists in Old Cairo. The book would also make an excellent gift to those interested in Christian, Islamic and Jewish traditions.

A delicious insatiable banquet of information about one of the world's one-of-a-kind historical sites that encompasses hundreds and hundreds of years and thousands and thousands of stories and events of religious and social struggle of people for their identity, freedom, and religious beliefs with the finger and foot prints of them all engraved all over its walls and alleys illustrated and written by some of the most renowned scholars and experts in the field.
