This book should get you a B

This book offers practical, time-tested advice for performing well on law school exams. I've tutored students on test-taking for years, and this book covers 90% of what it takes to excel on law school exams--clarity of expression, issue spotting, analysis, and organization. But in my experience, those will get you a B or a B+ at best. What you need is that added something, that brilliant insight, that "extra" that gets the professor to say "Wow. This is an A exam."
What is that? To me, it's understanding what the professor is looking for--knowing the professor's approach or angle or idiosyncratic preferences--then using that knowledge to reinforce those preferences or challenge them thoughtfully. You must make your answer not only legally right but intellectually satisfying to the professor.
How do you do that? Some people just have the knack. For the rest, spend time talking to the professor in and out of class. Read what the professor has written. Immerse yourself in the professor's world (as it relates to the course). Probably a book can't teach that, and this one doesn't try.

The first half of the book is devoted to influential works of fiction, as Henderson offers a series of spirited, attentive readings of works by Zora Neale Hurston, Alice Walker, Sherley Anne Williams, Toni Morrison, Gayl Jones, and Nella Larsen. The second half shifts gears to consider the world of female African American performance, most notably in the figures of Josephine Baker and the video dancer. Drawing on the trope of "dancing diaspora," Henderson proposes a model of theorizing based on "performing testimony" and "critical witnessing." Throughout the book, Henderson draws on a history of black women not only in the Pentecostal Holiness Church, but also within the traditions of classical, Christian, African, and black diasporic spirituality and performance. Ultimately, Speaking in Tongues and Dancing Diaspora provides a deeply felt reflection on race and gender and their effects within the discourses of speaker/listener and audience/performer.

I had never heard the term "couch lock" but I've had the condition and now posses the adjectives to describe it. I learned about the major differences between sativa and indaca. The pictures are plentiful and pleasing to the eye. There are so many varieties out there and this book is the first step in helping people get to know them all. I look forward to the Big Book of Buds II and so on and so forth...until every variety is known to all who wish to know.

I love the great pictures in this book. The information is very helpful in describing each type of bud. It tells you what to expect from each one. I find this very helpful when researching buds. As a graphic designer I think this layout is top notch. Crisp, clear and easy to understand.

Really better than anything out there...

P>Anyways, at first I THOUGHT it was like the seed company descriptions, but the truth is there is ALOT of information in this book...the photos are actually really good quality...and there's a whole bunch of them...the information on each strain is amazing: flower time, yield, taste/smell, type of high (really cool part), type of growing conditions, and in most cases what the PARENTS are....All in all a REALLY informative, fun book. Anyone I have shown it to hasn't been able to put it down until they are done....:)

Real human communications

Compare and contrast with REBT by Albert Ellis and Meditation by Matthieu Ricard. Preparing and developing your listening skills are essential to social skills in any profession where daily human interaction is needed. This book is set in context of sales in business only as an example and has little to do with sales. It is not a manipulative approach often used in sales, cons, and psychopathy. It is based on real human values, emotions, and communications.
I would not share this with anyone other than close and trusted friends, as it is radically different from the current psychopathic business environment. I cite Robert Hare on this assertion.

About the Author
Noel James, Professor of Geology at Queen’s University, Canada, has, for over 40 years focused his research on carbonate sediments and rocks that range from the modern seafloor to the Archean, studying their origin via extensive marine and terrestrial fieldwork, petrography, and geochemistry.�� He has taught numerous courses on oceanography, carbonate sedimentology, petroleum geology and the evolution of North America to undergraduates, graduate students, and professionals as well as editing or authoring nine scientific books.� He has been honoured many times by learned societies, is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, and a Member of the Order of Canada.

Brian Jones, Distinguished University Professor (Geology) at the University of Alberta, Canada, has, for over 40 years taught numerous courses at the introductory and advanced level on carbonate sedimentology and diagenesis.� His research on carbonates has concentrated on the deposition and diagenesis of modern and Cenozoic deposits in the Caribbean, surface and subsurface Paleozoic rocks in the Western Canadian Sedimentary Basin, many of which are prolific hydrocarbon reservoirs, and spring deposits worldwide. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, and the first Middleton Medalist of the Geological Association of Canada.

ANOTHER LOOK AT THE SPANISH REVOLUTION

I have written reviews of many of Ernest Hemingway's major novels elsewhere in this space. I have reviewed his major novel on the Spanish Civil War For Whom the Bells Toll, as well. Here I review a short play of his concerning that same event. This play is the main item of interest for me in an anthology that also includes his first 49 short stories. I will make a few minor comments on them at the end. However, here I wish to address the main issue that drives the play The Fifth Column. I believe that this is fitting in the year of the 70th anniversary of the Barcelona Uprising-the last chance to save the Spanish Revolution.

The main action here concerns the actions, manners, and love life of a seemingly irresolute character, Phillip, in reality a committed communist who has found himself wrapped up intensely in the struggle to fight against Franco's counter-revolution. His role is to ferret out the fifth columnists that have infiltrated into Madrid for intelligence/sabotage purposes on behalf of the Franco forces in the bloody civil war that was shaking Republican Spain. The term `fifth column' comes from the notion that not only the traditional four columns of the military are at work but a fifth column of sympathizers who are trying to destabilize the Republic. What to do about them is the central question of this, or any, civil war.

At the time there was some controversy that swirled around Hemingway for presenting the solution of summary executions of these agents as the correct way of dealing with this menace. I have questioned some of Hemingway's political judgments on Spain elsewhere, particularly concerning the role of the International Brigades, but he is right on here. Needless to say, as almost always with Hemingway, a little love interest is thrown into the mix to spice things up. However, in the end, despite the criminal Stalinist takeover of the Spanish security apparatus and its counter-revolutionary role in gutting the revolutionary promise in Spain this play presents a question all militants need to be aware of.

As for the other works included here there are many classics such as The Snows of Kilimanjaro, The Killers, many of the youthful Nick Adams stories, stories on bullfighting, a few on the never-ending problems of love and its heartbreaks, and some sketches that were included in A Farewell to Arms. Well worth your time. As always Hemingway wields his sparse and functional language to make his points. Again, as always read this man. But what you really need to read here is The Fifth Column. Okay.

Early Hemingway writings anthology a nice find - even with a missing page!

After a recent trip to Oak Park, IL, which included a visit to the Hemingway Museum and Birth Home there, I wanted to explore some of Hemingway's early writings. This collection of his only full lengh play and his first 49 short stories (one of which is actually a short one-act play) provided me with an excellent opportunity to do just that. I will have to do some research at the local library to see how the final story ends, seeing as the last page in this volume is missing, but the vendor offered me a 25% discount or full refund when I discovered this situation - which I think was very fair on their part. I elected to keep the volume and have enjoyed reading it.

About the Author
Stephen Ansolabehere is Professor of Government at Harvard University. He is the coauthor of The Media Game and Going Negative: How Political Advertising Alienates and Polarizes the American Electorate, which was awarded the Goldsmith Book Prize. His articles have appeared in The American Political Science Review, The Journal of Politics, Legislative Studies Quarterly, and Public Opinion Quarterly. He has been awarded fellowships by the Carnegie Corporation Fellowship and the Hoover Institution. He served as a codirector of the CalTech/MIT Voting Project, established in the wake of the 2000 presidential election to evaluate the current state of the reliability and uniformity of U.S. voting systems and to propose uniform guidelines and requirements for reliable voting and performance.

James M. Snyder Jr. is the Arthur and Ruth Sloan Professor of Political Science and Economics at MIT. He has published nearly 70 articles in peer-reviewed journals and edited volumes.

About the Author

Howard Bingham has documented much of the history of our times with millions of still images. He authored Muhammad Ali: A Thirty Year Journey and Muhammad Ali's Greatest Fight. As a photographer for Life, Look, Time, Newsweek, Sports Illustrated, People Ebony and many other international publications, Bingham has documented the most important events and peronalities of our time. He is the personal photographer to the families of Muhammad Ali and Bill Cosby.

Your library is empty without this book

Remember how you felt watching Spike Lee's adaptation of `Malcolm X'? Remember the uncanny metamorphosis of Denzel? Remember the end? The eulogy? When I was reading and looking through this book of our history I got that same feeling in my gut. No matter how brilliant the acting and production of `Malcolm X' was, it paled in comparison to the man himself. Malcolm's pictures and the unmistakable voice of the legendary (YES, legendary) Ossie Davis was the catalyst pride that swelled in each of our breast. For those of us too young to have missed the 60's and 70's and might have forgotten the stories of our mothers, sisters, uncles, aunts, and pastors; this collection is priceless.

No matter your stance on the Panthers, you had better concede one thing; they changed history for Black people AND for America. Trust me; I've heard all of the "bad" stories about the Panthers. Mainly from people who don't have the first damn clue. I've also heard the good. Mainly from the people who were beaten by said clues. The Panthers were soldiers. Plain and simple. To call them anything less would be an insult, an injustice, and utterly contemptuous. They lived and fought in a violently severe time in America's history, and that history must not be forgotten or watered down. The souls that had dogs sicced on them, fire hoses that tore away at their skin, and someone else's saliva bathing their face deserve better. They demand it.

Mr. Howard L. Bingham's pictorial anthology on the Black Panthers is one of those books that need to be on every Black person's coffee table and in every Black person's library. Am I militant? Hell no. I just know my history and I'm proud of my history. Those who lived through this time will recognize these pictures, the era, and reminisce. Memories good and bad will surface. For those (like me) who grew up listening to these stories, this book is an invaluable piece of much needed history.

Now... about the pictures. Powerful. Historic. Moving. Potent. Unique. Beautiful. Dominating. The radiant pictures of Kathleen Cleaver were enough to do it for me. Next to the raised black-gloved fist, is there anything so visual stunningly powerful? So stunningly beautiful? So stunningly dangerous? Had I not known better I would have thought that SHE was the reason it was called the `Panther' party. Black. Strong. Intellectually savage. The incredibly cynical looks Bobby Seale gives the world captured on film makes you smile with a seething understanding of his thoughts. Throughout this book the power that is emanated through the lens of Mr. Bingham is glorious and vivid. Know that clich�; "a picture is worth a thousand words"? These are worth a thousand and one. By a factor of ten.

The short essays written by Howard Bingham, Gilbert Moore, Tessa Hicks, Mar Hollingsworth, Earl Ofari Hutchinson, and Bernard Kinsey are the Clubman to the perfect haircut. They said just enough without saying too much, and that is a talent in and of itself. While I can easily follow their work now because of the internet, oh how I wish I could have read/heard their words first hand. For some this will be a history book. For others; a diary. For me, it was a pleasure.

The Black Panther Party has left for generations to come examples of community based empowerment projects, anti-war activism, and a willingness to struggle with all other people (regardless of race) who believe in economic and social justice.
