The Ultimate Book on How to Quilt a Quilt

I learned to quilt by taking serveral classes and by reading lots of quilting books. If anything, I consider myself a mostly self-taught quilter. Anyone who quilts knows that the content of nearly all quilting books and magazines is primarily concerned with featuring different patterns, as well as simplified directions on piecing, layering, binding, etc.
With all the patterns out there, what seems to get lost in the process is the actual quilting itself. In fact, I have found that a lot of books and magazines simply tell you to "quilt as desired." Almost nowhere can you find explicit directions on how to do just that: quilt.
Before this book, my attempts at quilting with a needle have been met with dismal failure. It took me forever to badly quilt just a few inches of fabric, and I got sore hands fingers in the process. Because I never learned the real basics of quilting with a needle, I had tons of unfinished pieced quilt tops lying around. I managed to finish a few quilts only because I ended up tying them.
Finally, in That Perfect Stitch (and I understand from Roxanne's website that there is even an accompanying video), I have figured out how to quilt a quilt. Roxanne not only explains how the fabric, batting, thread, and needles afffects the final outcome of the quilting stitch, she also gives very explicit photographs showing how to make a proper rocking stitch.
I learned something new in each chapter of Roxanne's book. Quilters everywhere simply must read this book. It will really open your eyes and save you *tons* of time and frustration.

Who knew so much could be learned about a stitch!

This is an extraordinary book that really surprised me. I have read tons of quilting books and most of them are inspiring visually but not many have taught me how to improve my technique. I am a beginning quilter so I've really been hunting for help. The author of this book did tons of research on all the different materials used in quilting and set out to find out why some work better than others. It sounds like it would be dry reading but somehow she makes it fascinating. I have no doubt that the next time I put needle to quilt I will have a better stitch and a better understanding of why the materials work together in the way they do. Oh and besides the interesting text you will see some stunning quilts.

If you are a quilter or have a desire to quilt at some point, this book will save you much time and money, and most likely help you avoid many of the mistakes a self-taught quilter makes over the years. This book gives you the information you need to make the right selection of tools and materials so that your project will be a beautiful display of workmanship that will be admired not only by yourself but by others as well. Much research has been done to inform you of the proper needles to use, the right style of thimble, how to identify the best cloth for your project, the best way to mark your quilt for the final stitching, and how to care for your quilt when you have finished it. This is the best book on hand quilting I have ever purchased. I would recommend it to anyone, novice or expert, who is interested in quilting. This is the best investment a quilter could make.

Published anonymously during her life, Austen s work was renowned for its realism, humour, and commentary on English social rites and society at the time. Austen s writing was supported by her family, particularly by her brother, Henry, and sister, Cassandra, who is believed to have destroyed, at Austen s request, her personal correspondence after Austen s death in 1817. Austen s authorship was revealed by her nephew in A Memoir of Jane Austen, published in 1869, and the literary value of her work has since been recognized by scholars around the world.

Laughed Myself Silly

Imagine the scene -- as I'm sitting there reading, I come to a particularly hilarious bit and start cracking up, and my husband looks up from his computer with a most decidedly odd expression. So I have to explain to him exactly why I should find a scene of an Egyptian mummy being raised from the dead hilarious. After all, aren't reanimated mummies usually the stuff of horror movies, tromping about in search of their next victim?

Except Mansfield Park and Mummies is not horror. Not at all. Instead of a monster that's a Menace because it's a Menace, the revivified Pharaoh East Wind, now calling himself Lord Eastwind and enjoying the sartorial splendor of a Regency gentleman, is a witty chap who just happens to have this little problem. Every so often he has to top off his supply of the Breath of Life, and out of deference to the lady of the house under whose roof he is a guest, he is constrained to take only a small portion of the life force of any one of the servants. Which he does with utmost politeness, wooing them with dreams of Egypt and exotic beauty, and leaving them missing a little time and feeling most decidedly odd.

And he's a bit of a romantic, and is certain that Fanny Price must be his long-lost love of thirty centuries gone by. Yes, here we have an undead who is genuinely capable of love, and of having his heart broken upon the steadfast devotion of the object of his affection for the rather dour seminarian Edmund. And thus even the final defeat of the Mummy's Curse has its poignancy, and leaves me thinking, "and seal it with a kiss."

Sheer joy

A friend got this book for me as a Christmas gift,
since Jung's new _Liber Novus_ was a little beyond
her means.

I read _Mansfield Park and Mummies_ in one weekend,
with howls of laughter, then re-read it with fewer
giggles and more introspection. Poor Jane Austen has
had many irreverent and awkward send-ups over the last
decade. Many of her newer literary 'collaborators'
have only a smirking relationship with their source
material, sampling it randomly and layering it with
a slick, hip, high-fructose current-culture candy
shell to make it palatable to commercial fiction readers.

Ms. Nazarian's take has genuine affection for, and
understanding of, Austen's tone and background. Rather
than zombies shoehorned into the Regency, the budding
Egyptomania in her version of _Mansfield_ leads to a
hysterical comedy of class and errors, laced with
enough gags to stand beside 'She Stoops to Conquer',
'Jeeves and Wooster', and the Marx Brothers.

Readers who enjoyed the humor and Egyptology in Elizabeth
Peters 'Peabody' novels might really like this. Casual fans
of Austen should delight in it. And Austen scholars, recoiling
in horror from the recent Zombiefests, should give this one
a try. It's gold, and I can't wait for Nazarian's next foray
into the Austenverse.

Fanny Price: Mummy Slayer

I have always thought that Mansfield Park is the weakest of all of Jane Austin's books. The heroine, Fanny Price is a weaker character than Elizabeth Bennett and less interesting than either Miss Dashwood.

Not so in Mansfield Park and Mummies, where she is elevated to the status of mummy fighter and vampire hunter (but sadly, not slayer). The book is filled with hilarious footnotes and modern slants on Austin's historic social commentary. The author's deft touches keep the book interesting throughout it's considerable length.

About the Author
John Coburn grew up in the Hawaiian Islands, the seventh of sixteen children. He received his Associate of Arts degree in 1977 from Windward Community College, where he graduated with honors. In 1979 he received a Bachelor’s Degree in Education from the University of Hawaii. After being lured into the business world for five years, he returned to his first love, accepting a teaching position in high school mathematics where he was recognized as Teacher of the Year in 1987. Soon afterward, the decision was made to seek a Masters Degree, which he received two years later from the University of Oklahoma. For the last fifteen years, he has been teaching mathematics at the Florissant Valley campus of St. Louis Community College, where he is now a full professor. During his tenure there he has received numerous nominations as an outstanding teacher by the local chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, two nominations to Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers and was recognized as Teacher of the year in 2004 by the Mathematics Educators of Greater St. Louis (MEGSL). He has made numerous presentations and local, state and national conferences on a wide variety of topics. His other loves include his family, music, athletics, games and all things beautiful, and hopes this love of life comes through in his writing, and serves to make the learning experience an interesting and engaging one for all students.

Skips logical steps

I'm writing this review as an adjunct professor who got stuck teaching Precalculus (with little formal training). My knowledge of Precalculus is quite dated, as a result, I've been forced to relearn this material in order to teach it. I think that this background puts me in a great place to review a math text. I can decipher the material with some work each lesson. That's fine, as it usually helps me understand it better. However, this book's examples are not always step by step. They often skip a logical step and leave the reader to figure out what it is that they did. Perhaps that's how some people like their textbooks, or people with a Math degree may not even notice. However, as a person who must use the book and only the book to figure out the math, it can be quite painful to try and make the connections that the authors left out.

I will say that the book seems to be comprehensive and covers most of the information I need. I can not however, recommend this book to a student who is trying to learn the information without the aid of a professor who can bridge for them, the gaps in logic.

About the Author
Robert Prigo received his doctorate in Physics and Physics Education from the University of California at Santa Barbara and has taught in the Physics Department at Middlebury College for the past 27 years. He currently resides in Middlebury, Vermont.

An enjoyable read

Enjoyed most of the extracted compiled stories. Many are quite amazing. Some were rather long and slow. Overall, a nice read on the subject.

I could not put this book down...

This collection of stories about WWII airmen on both sides of the conflict truly captivated me. I was sorry to finish the work. The story of the P-47 pilot trying to get his damaged plane back to safe territory made me feel like I was in the cockpit of the Thunderbolt with him! I could not wait to share the book with my friends.
