About the Author
Steve’s research interests are in practitioner research where he has worked with networks of teachers on the development of their classroom evaluations. He has also been involved with the development of Education Studies as a subject in HE. Steve has been chair of the British Education Studies Association and was more recently involved in the review of the Education Studies Subject Benchmarks for QAA.

Steve currently teaches research methods on the master’s in leadership and management and education studies on the combined awards program.

Diana Burton is Professor of Education and Director of the Centre for Developmental and Applied Research in Education at the University of Wolverhampton. She was formerly Pro Vice-Chancellor and Professor of Education at Liverpool John Moores University, where she was previously Dean of Education. She worked for many years at Manchester Metropolitan University leading teacher education programmes and was a secondary school teacher before that.

Diana has a Masters and PhD in the field of Educational Psychology. She is the author of a number of books and articles on pupil learning, teacher development, educating children with behavioural, emotional and social disadvantage, citizenship and social justice. She is a fellow of the Royal Academy for the Society of the Arts, and the Higher Education Academy and an active member of the British Education Research Association.

The wisdom of age

In the introduction to this book, the author says that it was an idea that she had been mulling over for many years before she finally got around to writing it. She also says that it is one of her favorites. It's not one of my favorites, although I enjoyed re-reading it, especially in light of what I know of the author's life.

It's a book about families and family relationships. By the time of its writing, Christie had lived through two world wars. She had been married twice and divorced once. She had raised a daughter and was enjoying being a grandmother. And she was (like all good writers) an observer. In her autobiography she says, "Now that I am older and have seen more and know more about men and women...."

The plot of this book revolves around the quirks of human nature as seen by a shrewd woman with decades of experience. The characters are believable because the reader senses that they were all based on people that the author had known. Christie knew that there are different kinds of ruthlessness and that most of us are capable of being ruthless (perhaps even to the point of committing murder) if the stakes are high enough. There are three murders and one suicide in this book and all occurred because someone found them necessary.

This is one of Christie's "stand-alone" mysteries. No Miss Marple. No Hercule Poirot. The narrator is a man whose young adult life has been consumed by WWII. He's familiar with crime because his father is Commissioner of Police and he's in love with the granddaughter of the first victim. He knows that when a murder goes unsolved, the innocent suffer as much (if not more) than the guilty and he's determined that his Sophia won't spend the rest of her life under a cloud of suspicion.

It's a good mystery with a horrifying, but inevitable conclusion. And it makes you think. I can see why Christie was proud of it.

This is a period book written in post-war Britain. The book is written in first person from the view of a man in love with a woman whose grandfather has recently been murdered. She and her entire family fervently hope the killer is the young wife of the grandfather, but they also harbor an equally fervent belief that the killer is actually one of them. The young woman will not marry until the cloud over the family is dispelled, so her lover, along with Scotland Yard, must solve the murder mystery.

One of Christie's best

I agree with Christie here. "Crooked House" is one of her best. One thing that Christie always excelled at was portraying the interaction between members of a group, be it the Leonides family in "Crooked House," the "guests" in [book:And Then There Were None|16299], or the tourists in [book:Evil Under the Sun|16305]. These aren't mindless stereotypes - they are people.

"Crooked House" is a non-series novel - no Poirot, Miss Marple or (thank heavens!) Tommy and Tuppence. The story is narrated by Charles Hayward, who is engaged to Sophia Leonides, granddaughter of Aristide Leonides, a Greek who came to England decades earlier and made a fortune. He married the daughter of an English squire and had eight children. At the time of the events in "Crooked House," only two sons - Roger and Philip are still live. In addition to Aristide, the residents of the household are his young second wife, Brenda; Edith de Haviland, his first wife's sister; Roger and his wife Clemency, a scientist; Philip, his wife Magda, an actress, and their three children - Sophia, Eustace, and Josephine; Laurence Brown, the children's tutor; and Nannie, nanny to the Aristide's children and now his grandchildren.

Sophia describes her grandfather to Charles: "He's rather a person, my grandfather. He's over eighty, about four foot ten, and everybody else looks rather dim beside him." Charles asks if she likes her grandfather. "Better than anyone in the world," said Sophia.

Aristide is devoted to his family and does everything he can for them. He places Roger at the head of the family business and settles money on him and Philip. The family members want for nothing - which is probably part of the problem. They have nothing to strive for. Consider Magda: "She's been able to pick and choose, and to go where she likes and occasionally to put up the money to finance a show where she's fancied a certain part - usually the last part in the world to suit her." She's not the only one. As for her husband Philip: "Writes books. Can't think why. Nobody wants to read them. All about obscure historical details." (Edith de Haviland, his aunt) Roger has no mind for business and has run the family business into ruin. His wife Clemency is jealous of Aristide's interference in their life and wants Roger all to herself.

When Aristide is killed, suspicion naturally falls upon his young wife Brenda, thirty-four to his eighty-five. She gave him his regular injections of insulin. It was the last injection that killed him - instead of insulin, it contained eserine, which came from his eye drops. Brenda also appears to be infatuated with Laurence Brown, the children's tutor, who is considerably closer in age to her. Of course, she's also the outsider in the family - much younger than her late husband, obviously married him for his money, and has never fit in. Like Sophia says, "...it won't matter - so long as the right person killed him." The right person meaning, of course, Brenda.

However, when Charles arrives at the family home, Three Gables, and actually meets Brenda, he does not believe she could kill anyone. He also does not think Laurence Brown, the tutor, whom Sophia describes as a "scared rabbit" is capable of such a thing. Charles begins his own investigation with the help of Chief Inspector Taverner and Detective Sergeant Lamb. Meanwhile, little Josephine Leonides, Sophia's younger sister, listens at doors, takes notes, and sees and hears a great deal more than she should.

The killer is not finished yet. There is another murder and an attempted murder - and then the stark, awful truth is revealed. I've read most of Christie's books, but "Crooked House" has the most chilling, shocking murderer of them all. This one will really stay in your mind.

Very recommended.

Mary Jane Mucklestone is a hand knitting designer known for her colorful and inventive Fair Isle and colorwork designs. She is the author of 200 Fair Isle Motifs and the forthcoming Fair Isle Style, both by Interweave.

Collection of Scandinavian Motifs Takes Up Where Collection of Fair Isle Motifs Left Off

Mary Jane Mucklestone's 150 SCANDINAVIAN MOTIFS:THE KNITTER'S DIRECTORY does for Scandinavian knitting what her earlier book, 200 Fair Isle Motifs: A Knitter's Directory, did for Fair Isle knitting. The written technical material at the front of the book ("Essential Skills") is much the same, although some topics have been rewritten to reflect the differences between Scandinavian and Fair Isle knitting. Most of the clear, how-to photographs are new, but quite similar because they illustrate many of the same colorwork techniques.

Most of the book is given over to a knitter's directory of traditional repeating Scandinavian motifs. The directory starts with a "visual selector" that displays all of the motifs side-by-side. Once you have selected a motif, you then turn to that motif's pages, which show (1) a full-color, actual-size photograph of the knitted-up motif, (2) a black-and-white chart for the motif, (3) a color chart for the motif, and (4) a color-variation chart for the motif. The color-variation chart shows the motif with the dark and light colors reversed (dark motif/light background becomes light motif/dark background).

The book's cover photo displays three of the included Scandinavian motif designs. There are four patterns for Scandinavian knitting projects: (1) a blossom pincushion, (2) a pair of traditional mittens, (3) a reindeer hat, and (4) a geometric cowl.

A Wonderful Resource for Scandinavian Knitting and Motifs

This new book by Mary Jane Mucklestone is a must-have for any knitter who wants to incorporate Scandinavian designs into their knitting. The book has sections on Essential Skills which goes over yarn, needles, gauge, casting on, circular knitting, holding the yarn, stranding, weaving, increases and decreases, steeling, correcting mistakes, blocking and finishing, and using color.

There is a section of traditional Scandinavian garments such as jackets, sweaters, and mittens from the different countries in the region. There is also a section on using motifs in your knitting. Motifs can be a change in orientation, figurative motifs, or transition motifs. There is next a section on planning your project. Ms. Mucklestone goes over the questions that each knitter should ask themselves before starting a project. These go from the initial measurements to the final design.

Most of the book consists of a motif directory with instructions on how to knit each of the photographed motifs in the book. These motifs take up over 100 pages!

There are even projects included in this book. There is a pincushion, a pair of traditional mittens, a reindeer hat, and a geometric cowl. At the end of the book there is a section on resources in case you would like to look up further information on the subject of Scandinavian knitting.

Overall, this is a very informative and excellent addition to my library.

You would think we have enough stitch dictionaries, but this book not only inlcudes a wealth of motifs rarely seen and even more rarely charted, but includes suggestions for combining them in garments or other pieces that make it a unique and useful reference piece.

Useful if slightly out of date info.

There's a bunch of useful information in here but the book is now a couple of years old so some of it is out of date. Some of the examples of current tech are no longer relevant.
The book is also in dire need of being edited. There are spelling mistakes, broken or missing links and some passages that have been inserted into the book in very strange places. As I read the book I wanted to correct it myself and send it to the author.
Having said all that it is a useful publication and is definitely worth the $10.

So Much Information it's Worth Three Times the Price

I was really impressed by The Ultimate Tech Guide For Travelers Version 2.0. The volume of information, ease of understanding, and number of tips that I didn't previously know about, despite the fact that I'm a perpetual traveler and work on the road, makes this the best eBook ever about technology and traveling. Just the tips about keeping my data safe were well worth the price. But add all the other information and it's easily worth three times the price. Plus, the interactivity of it makes it very easy to access additional info whenever you're online. Anil Polat really knows his stuff. Definitely a must-have book for anyone who travels with their laptop, iPad, iPhone, or other technology.

Great Product and Service

I travel constantly and work on the road. This book is the best tool I have found for learning strategies for traveling effectively, efficiently and securely anywhere in the world.

The book comes with the ability to ask the author questions via email for a limited time. I read the book and sent Anil a detailed question on two occasions and both times he followed up with specific answers within 24 hours. I think this service really ups the value of the book.

I believe any traveler, from occasional to full time, will find this information useful and relevant, as well as time and money saving. I don't know of another product like it. And in Frank Sakai and his African-American friends, it presents characters who find significant common ground in their struggles, but who also engage each other across grounds—historical and cultural—that are still very much in dispute.

Moving in and out of the past—from the internment camps of World War II, to the barley fields of the Crenshaw District in the 1930s, to the streets of Watts in the 1960s, to the night spots and garment factories of the 1990s—Southland weaves a tale of Los Angeles in all of its faces and forms.

Jackie Ishida, 25, is undone by the sudden death in 1994 of her loving, seemingly healthy Japanese grandfather, Frank Sakai. A veteran of World War II, he lived a philanthropic life and in the 1960s owned a small grocery in the racially integrated Crenshaw district he grew up in. When Jackie's aunt Lois finds a large shoebox with $38,000 in cash in Frank's closet, both women are perplexed, particularly since they also discover a mysterious beneficiary, Curtis Martindale, in a decades-old will. Lois dispatches Jackie to find Curtis. Enter strong, street-smart James Lanier, a cousin of Curtis's, who informs Jackie that Curtis is dead. An employee at Frank's store during the Watts riots in 1965, Curtis, along with three other black teenage boys, was found frozen to death in the store's freezer. This heinous crime was never reported (nor discussed within the Sakai family) and though white beat cop Nick Lawson was pegged as a prime suspect, the case was never solved and Frank closed the store permanently. As Jackie and James dig deeper into Curtis's past, their friendship (and awkward attraction to each other) takes its toll on Jackie's fading three-year relationship with girlfriend Laura. In chapters alternating past and present, clues are uncovered that romantically link Curtis's mother Alma to Frank. When a surprise suspect in the killings is fingered, it paves the way for a dark conclusion rooted in skepticism, injustice and racial intolerance. Somewhat overplotted but never lacking in vivid detail and authentic atmosphere, the novel cements Revoyr's reputation as one of the freshest young chroniclers of life in L.A.

A novel for the big city

There are not enough good things to say about Revoyr's Southland. The novel is beyond incredible and dare I say that Ms. Revoyr is perhaps one of the best contemporary authors of our time. It is a gripping and wonderful novel about tough times in Los Angeles county. Those who have lived through the era following WWII will relate to the heated, racial tensions between that erupted during the Watts riots. If you are part of the latter generation, you will experience a harsh dose of reality as you move with the main character in her search for the killer of four young African American men. The book is extremely realistic, staying true to the time period but also being captivating in that Revoyr's writing style is both creative and engaging. This novel will speak most heavily to native Angelinos but is transcendent and makes a terrific read for anyone attempting to understand the fabric of the star-studded town of L.A

I got this book for my class on Los Angeles history, and I really enjoyed it. The book flowed well and had a very entertaining storyline. This was one book that I actually took the time to read cover to cover rather than skim through. Though its been a while since I read this book, this book makes me smile whenever I think about it. I really appreciated following the narrator's path to self-discovery while she is seeking to unveil the truth about this history. I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested.

Tour de force of racial disharmony in 1965 Los Angeles

Southland by Nina Revoyr is a tour de force that tells a story of racial disharmony within the seemingly gentle confines of Los Angeles. With the accounting of two families, one Japanese, one Black, we learn the story of how four young boys are intentionally frozen to death in a meat locker during the Watts Rebellion of 1965.

The Store owner Frank Sakai is a Japanese American who has been living relatively peacefully in the mixed racial neighborhood since acquiring the store. He'd been interred with his family at Manzanar and subsequently served in the 442nd Regimental Combat Team of the United States Army, a fighting unit composed almost entirely of American soldiers of Japanese descent who turned out to be the most decorated unit in American history. Returning home after the war he was able to purchase a small grocery story in Central LA.

Upon Frank's death in 1994 his granddaughter, a law student, and a black man who works with youth in a mid-city community center team up to find out the facts surrounding the death of the young men, why Frank had left $38,000 to one of them and mostly, who was responsible for the heinous crime.

The two initially explore their own family dialogues but find it difficult to pull together the remnants of the story. "No one talked about history" they lament. As the scope of the investigation enlarges and as each piece of the puzzle is moved into place the real story gets more complicated. Soon even they begin to doubt what they find.

The accounts of the Japanese Americans starting in 1939 along with the Black family chronicle starting six years later when the family of one of the boys moves from Texas demonstrates brave and stalwart endurance from both factions. I read a review of this book in which the reader said that his book club did not like the book because it was too sad. I feel that the thing that can make history most sad is only if we don't learn from it.

The other side of history

A brilliant intellectual pursuit that gives a glimpse of Nehru's intellect, comprehension and culture. In the myriad of Western opinions of human progress, 'discoveries' and colonialism, Nehru's Glimpses stand out for its bold 'other view' of history as well as generous and magnanimous acknowledgement of the merits of every civilisation. To have the 'Glimpses' lost on one, as a mere rambling collection of letters would be tragic. To appreciate the 'Glimpses' one must understand the context in which it was written. It was not meant as an exercise to outline history for the world with the global audience in mind. It was merely a father's restricted dialogue with a daughter outside the prison walls with the intention of instilling pride in her culture and history. And maybe, as an inspiration to India's freedom fighters to stand up against the might of a hegemonic empire and its propaganda on history and civilisation. While the bleakness of his and the Colonial India's circumstances colour his opinions slightly, it does not blind him to historical realities.
That a book with such a narrow, domestic agenda subsequently appealed to the wider audience internationally is probably the finest testament of Nehru's brilliance.

Masterpiece

A very concise yet informative survey of world history from the antiquity. This book touches almost everything important in history. Could be used both for recreational reading and also as a primer in world history for a university/school course. The only flaw in the book is that it stops abruptly in 1932. No fault of Mr Nehru, though. I guess someone should work on this book and bring it up to date.

History by a history maker.

Nehru himself calls the book as "Ramblings", given the background that book is a compilation of a whole bunch(196) of lengthy letters to his daughter, Indira Priyadarshini, during his stay in various goals across British Raj (which made him rely on memory than references). His main aim was to introduce his lovely daughter to the world but NOT to be a historian. He starts from the pre-Indus Valley civilization days and ends just before the dawn of WW II in this 971-page book. The book, apart from being journal of events in history, talks about opinions of Nehru on various events with more weightage to his favorite ones.
The book with Nehru's democratic spirit, his scietific and rational approach, his masterly narration with a poetic temper and his control over the language make the book immensely readable.
