Stunning Collectors Edition

Having only an old 1994 worn paperback edition of the Lord of the Rings, I wanted to purchase a version that I could read and display for many years to come. I did a ton of research and decided upon this version (ISBN 116-1749849-2513827), illustrated by Alan Lee and published by Harper Collins in June 2014 (I am adding these details because the Amazon.com site does not make it clear what this version is). Please note that this particular printing is NOT available in the US but any Tolkien or LotR devotee should not be deterred (Frodo wouldn't have been!). I must say that this is the finest published one-volume version of the LotR that I have ever laid eyes upon, and is well worth every penny. It includes approximately 50 high-quality color illustrations by Alan Lee, which even for a 30-something like me makes the reading experience exceptional. The front and back covers are made of durable, high-quality cloth (as shown), with a strong and handsome turquoise binding. The pages -- not just the illustrations but the entire book -- are glossy and made of "whiter" paper than you generally find, the margins large, and the typeset easy on the eyes.

For those who care about such things, the printing is based on the 2004 corrected text, with even further corrections. There are updated introductions/forwards by Wayne G. Hammond & Christina Scull, authors of the authoritative "LOTR Readers Companion," as well as by Douglas A. Anderson, who provides a detailed publication history of the Lord of the Rings. The full appendices are included.

Two-page red and black maps of Middle Earth and of Gondor/Rohan/Mordor adorn the front and back covers, with a map of the Shire before the first chapter. Also present are other essentials such as the Doors of Moria and the Tomb of Balin. The only drawback is that the facsimile pages of the Book of Mazarbul was not included, which I found to be surprising and a bit disappointing Also, the ring inscription and the Gandalf "rune" are printed in black rather than silver and red. Probably the main issue is the clear plastic slipcover, which is barely bigger than the book itself, and it is difficult to slip the book back inside it after taking it out. You are more likely to scuff the corners of the book. That being said, these are far from dealbreakers, and the joy to be received from owning this edition far outweighs these issues.

Very nice books, binding seems nice. I love the covers although they are not "paperback" and are more of a fake leather material. These books are beautiful and very convenient. They are pocket-sized which is great for on the go, they aren't too small or too big (actually bigger than I anticipated which is a plus). The font size is readable, the only thing I would have to note is that the font size isn't the same throughout the different books. The font size seems to be based on the length of the books, the longer the books are, the smaller the font is (I suppose this was in order to keep them pocket-sized as well as consistent with the sizes of the other books throughout the set). If you have decent to good eyes, this set would be perfectly fine for you on the go but those people who don't have as good of eye sight, because I know some people who tend to get headaches while focusing on small font, this set may not be for you. I will upload some pics of the font comparisons, books, etc.

A great edition for the price

Review for The Lord of the Rings.

I'll keep it brief, this is not a review of the actual story but of this specific edition. I have attached many pictures that I hope help you decide if this is an edition you want to buy.

Pros:
- The font is big and easy to read.
- 65 beautiful illustrations by Alan Lee that bring the story to life.

Cons:
- Slipcover is an opaque plastic, whit a modern look that I think doesn't complement the book.
- One or two blank pages before and/or after each illustration.

Overall I think this is a great edition and it's worth buying.

In this book James Turner Johnson explores the cultural traditions of the Christian West and Islam in an effort to encourage a constructive dialogue on the nature of war for religion. No other issue highlights the difference between these two cultures more clearly or with more relevance for their interrelations throughout history and in the contemporary world.

In the West, war for religion is most often dismissed as a relic of the past, belonging to a time less rational and less civilized than our own. From this perspective, Muslims who advocate holy war are seen as religious fanatics who are supporting criminal and terrorist activity. By contrast, war for religion has an honored place in the Islamic world, associated with a perennial religious requirement: striving in the path of faith by heart, tongue, and hands. This striving is designated by the now familiar term jihad. In fact, striving by the sword is the "lesser" jihad, and many Muslims themselves are troubled by reductionistic appeals to jihad to justify terrorism, revolution, and anti-western activity. According to Johnson, for there to be any dialogue between Islam and the West we must understand that in the West religion and politics are placed in separate spheres, while normative Islam regards religion as properly integral to the political order. From this perspective religious concerns should have a place in statecraft, including the use of military force.

Three questions form the heart of Johnson's inquiry: Is there a legitimate justification for war for religion? What authority is required? What is the proper conduct in such wars? In each case, he asks the question by comparing religious wars with other kinds of wars. The picture that emerges is of war for religion not as an expression of fanatical excess but as a controlled, purposeful activity. With an eye to the present day, Johnson examines cases in history where distinctive models of war for religion were implemented by rulers. This in turn sets the stage for critical judgment on contemporary appeals to the idea of jihad in relation to political aims.

Well known for his work on peace and just war, Johnson draws upon a wide base of historical and comparative scholarship. While the book is anchored primarily on the past, on the roots and historical development of the two traditions, his aim throughout is to shed light on contemporary attitudes, ideals, and behaviors, especially as they bear on real problems that affect relations between Western and Islamic cultures in the world today.

Garbled but useful reading

I found the structure of this book to be very garbled. Although the titles suggest that he intends to cover one tradition, then the other, in effect he keeps shifting from one to the next so that in the end, everything is lumped in together. If you struggle through, you'll get some good information out of it.

However, he uses ten words where one would do, rarely offers examples, and leaves the reader with the task of translating voluminous indirect language into something that might, somehow, be understood.

Confuses trivia knowledge with intelligence

I was very disappointed with these tests. Far too many of these questions to test your "intelligence" are in fact trivia that can be heavily influenced by the culture you live in. For instance, did you know that "Teton" is a word for a tribe of Lakota Sioux that appears in all major English language dictionaries and has US cities, counties and a National Park named after it? If your life experiences exposed you to this word, that's great! But you may get question 3 of test 1 wrong because while "TONET" can be unscrambled into the English word "TETON", it isn't the correct answer.

How many different words for the colors between blue and purple do you know? I quickly recognized that this what one of the questions was asking, but I wasn't able to come up with the correct word for bluish-purple (or was it purplish-blue?).

Do you know what the mathematical symbol for "identical with" is? No amount of abstract thinking is going to help you figure out what the symbol for a mathematical operator is. If you haven't learned what it is, you'll have to hope you recognize and can eliminate the others.

Do you know what the acceleration due to gravity on the surface of the Earth is in imperial units? Even if you could quickly integrate acceleration with respect to time in your head - twice - to derive the distance formula for an accelerating body, unless you also happen to be an experimental physicist in your spare time, you're probably going to need to have been exposed to this value for acceleration to get the answer.

The only good part about this book is that it was inexpensive. I purchased it because I enjoy doing these with my kids. Unfortunately since they have not yet learned that the Etruscans were an ancient Italian civilization, I guess their "intelligence" is just too limited.

Best for the Advanced IQ test takers

This book is an excellent book of brain teasers but it is also very discouraging at the same time. It does not teach you anything about the strategies that people can use to improve their IQs. Most of the questions will be very difficult for beginners. However, you can still look up the answers in the back and incorporate that logic into your test taking. For me this was the most effective way to use the book. I suggest you look elsewhere if you want a book that lays out concrete strategies for improving your IQ.

Disappointing

Questions are challenging but not always straightforward. In test 3 alone, there were no fewer than five questions where another answer than the one given in the answer key was also correct! As other reviewers have mentioned, there are numerous typos. I cannot recommend this book.

UPDATE: After working through part of test 5, I have now lowered my review from two stars to one. Here are specific examples:
Test 3, q. 11 - 3628 is the only number that doesn't repeat a digit
Test 3, q. 20 - all squares have either a single X outside the cross or multiple Xs inside; therefore, B should be the correct answer
Test 3, q. 11 - another arrangement is possible; swap positions of 1 & 4, 2 & 5
Test 3, q. 26 - A is the only one where the cone itself doesn't have a black dot
Test 3, q. 39 - quarter hour / hour hand
Test 5, q. 7 - 8 is the only number not divisible by 3
Test 5, q. 12 - 7 is NOT two places away from itself minus 1

I'm not going to continue wasting my time on a book with this many errors. Steer clear and save your money!
