3.5 Stars ..Who's on first, what's on second, I don't know...

First I would rate this a 3.5 stars I sorta liked it. The book kind of reads like an Abbott and Costello routine especially in the first chapter. The back and forth banter between characters are always talking in a circular argument that can get a little tiring after a while however that's what makes the book different from other stories. There are a lot of references to pop culture especially to Star Trek and being a Trekkie I found that funny. There is a point in the story where Morgan is trying to find out why he is needed for the team,and he says "Well then, what part of the team am I? Like the Red shirt or something?" Too funny. Anyway, the best way for me to describe this book is like a mash up of Dr. Who and Monty Python.

but the writing is good and easy to read and with a constant pace

This book has quite a few things going for it. It has humor and if you're into pop SciFi (Star Trek, Dr Who, films and books of that genre), you'll get most of the references. The story itself is too straightforward, but the writing is good and easy to read and with a constant pace. Took me few days to read and thoroughly enjoyed it. It's written almost with a movie script in mind. Would make a funny movie.

Funny and light

I enjoyed this light look into the geek world of sci fi. If you haven't followed most of the iconic sci fi television or movie epics, then some of the references will not make you smile. If you have watched those films or shows, you will grin, groan and even laugh. I enjoyed this book and can't wait for the sequel. I borrowed this book through my Kindle Prime library, but I may purchase it just to lift my spirits when I am down on Earth.

About the Author
Dwight H. Perkins is the H. H. Burbank Professor of Political Economy Emeritus at Harvard University and former director of the Harvard Institute for International Development. Professor Perkins is a leading scholar on the economies of East and Southeast Asia. Professor Perkins’s legacy is contained not only in the many chapters he has contributed to Economics of Development and in his many scholarly books and articles, but also in the thousands of students he has taught over his distinguished academic career (including all of his current coauthors!).

Steven Radelet joined Economics of Development for its fifth edition. At the time he was a fellow at Harvard’s Institute for International Development and taught in both Harvard’s economics department and the Kennedy School of Government. He subsequently was deputy assistant secretary of the U.S. Treasury for Africa, the Middle East, and South Asia; a Senior Fellow at the Center for Global Development; and Senior Advisor on Development for Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. He is an expert on foreign aid, developing country debt and financial crises, and economic growth, and he has extensive experience in West Africa and Southeast Asia. He currently serves as Chief Economist for the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID).

David L. Lindauer is the Stanford Calderwood Professor of Economics at Wellesley College, where he has taught since 1981. He has frequently served as a consultant to the World Bank and was a faculty associate of the Harvard Institute for International Development. Professor Lindauer’s area of expertise is in labor economics. His research and policy advising has included work on industrial relations, labor costs and export potential, minimum wages, poverty and unemployment, public sector pay and employment, and racial affirmative action. He has worked on labor market issues in East and Southeast Asia, Sub-Saharan Africa, and elsewhere. Professor Lindauer, an award-winning teacher of economics, brings his considerable experience teaching undergraduates to this edition.

Steven A. Block is Professor of International Economics and head of the International Development Program at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, Tufts University. He joins Economics of Development beginning with the seventh edition and has been teaching development economics at the Fletcher School since 1995. Professor Block also holds a faculty appointment at the Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy at Tufts University, and has been a visiting scholar at the Harvard University Center for International Development and at Harvard’s Weatherhead Center for International Affairs. He has published numerous scholarly articles in the areas of agricultural development and political economy, and worked extensively on policy advisory teams across Sub-Saharan Africa and in Southeast Asia.

THE BEST BOOK IN DEVELOPMENT ECONOMICS

I have recently had the pleasure to read this book. As a researcher and consultant, I have had the possibility of reading and studying in depth most of the books, papers, and so on, published on Development but I am sincere when I say to my colleagues that I have never read anything like this book, through which Professors Perkins, Radelet and Lindauer are able to explain for Undergraduate students (and anyone interested in this field) the basics (and not so basics) of Development and Economic Growth, forgetting about showing off and focusing just on transferring their knowledge to their students / readers. If I had to describe the book in one word, I would it is just "amazing" and, as it can be inferred from my words, I strongly recommend this book.

The book I've been looking for for a long time

This is a well-organized, straight-forward, and informative introduction to development economics. The book has obviously been edited and polished so as to deliver information to the student in the most efficient way possible. Also, this book is so interesting that it is a joy to read. I cannot say that about very many textbooks.

The nuts and bolts of inspired writing to help your favorite cause

If you bought every book ever published about capital campaigns, they'd all say the same thing: you need a case statement. They might even give you a bullet list of the sorts of things that are normally included in a case statement (but maybe not).

So you know you need a case statement, but you aren't sure exactly how to go about doing it. Most of us fundraisers give up right there and advise our executive director or board to hire a consultant for the campaign and have the "experts" write the case statement.

Sure, that's one way to go. An expensive way, but it does work.

However, for a mere $24.95 you can buy Tom Ahern's newest book and learn everything you need to know, then do it yourself. You'll save your organization a lot of money while becoming a better writer ~and~ a better fundraiser. Not only that, you'll be thoroughly entertained and amused while you read.

Pushes you to new heights

This book helped me achieve one of my greatest accomplishments as a fundraiser: drafting a stirring and compelling case for support in 10 days. I worked round-the-clock and checked in with trustworthy editors throughout the process, but this book was the true guide. I'm a guidebook enthusiast, and this is one of the best. Seriously. Fun, clear, focused, practical. Get it and make it your religion. You won't be disappointed.

Every nonprofit must have a case statement

Tom Ahern is a courageous guy. He's written this wonderful, important, thorough, step-by-step guidebook to conceiving and writing arguably the most important document your nonprofit can have: a case statement. Then he starts Chapter 31, Reality Check, with the subhead: "A less-than-great case won't kill your capital campaign." And includes in the Appendix Steve Manzi's Myth of the Campaign Case Statement Publication: "But you know what? Almost nobody really reads the Case Statement."

Well, first of all Tom's book shows you exactly how to get prospective donors to read your case statements. He covers everything from research and interviewing to organizing your thoughts. He tosses in emotions, headlines, and photos, too.

More important, for this strategician at least, is that Tom argues that every nonprofit needs to ask itself fundamental questions. He writes: "The mere act of writing a case helps you - forces you, really - to deeply investigate your organization's impact on the world, so you can successfully explain that impact to donors and prospects.

"Having a current case for support on file is an act of good management. A case consolidates your messages for common reference by staff and board, putting every potential voice, writer, and advocate on the same page."

I'd put it even more forcefully. Perhaps the number one problem I've seen in nonprofits is a lack of consensus why the organization exists and what it uniquely does. From a strategic point of view, everything you do emanates from that common understanding. It's not a nicety. It's an absolute.

Pyongyang showcases a series of site-by-site descriptions of one of the most inaccessible capitals in the world. Well researched commentary provides truthful insights behind official history and propaganda, ranging from the Korean War down to the present day. informative introduction to North Korea through its capital

This is a remarkably well-written book works on both the level of a pictorial city guide and as political geography. The North Korean capital of Pyongyang was effectively flattened during the Korean War (1950-53) and its rebuilding reflected a series of political choices from what sorts of activities to locate in the capital to what kind of architectural design, materials, and construction techniques to employ. Springer mines this intersection of cityscape and political history beautifully, and it is hard to imagine anyone who would not learn something new from reading this book.

Pretty good book

I like this book, it came in excellent shape and within a week. It was more of a tourist picture book; it didn't actually have much information about life in Pyongyang, just pictures and explanations. But overall it was a pretty good book.

The plays were much better than I had anticipated and I thoroughly enjoyed A Doll's House in particular. I have not read all 4, but can say that Ghosts and Hedda Gabler were good too.

Four classic plays from Ibsen

Actually, I've only read two of these plays before but I did
want to list the names of the four included in this volume:
A Doll's House;
Ghosts;
Hedda Gabler;
The Master Builder.

Masterful social drama (to sound like a back-of-the-book blurb).
Seriously though, Ibsen's plays are wonderful.

Four Ibsen plays constituting a marvelous case study

Henrik Ibsen's creation of "modern theater" makes him one of the most influential playwrights, along with William Shakespeare and Samuel Beckett, in the history of drama. This unique collection of the four plays he wrote between 1879 and 1884 provides teachers of drama/literature with an opportunity to look at a major writer trying to develop his craft. Ibsen is concerned with social criticism and each of these plays reflects his change in perspective as he tries to write a drama that will be both socially relevant and commercially successful. You have to remember the time and place that considered it shocking for Nora to leave her husband or for Mrs. Alving to consider euthenasia for her son. By turning to "comedy" (of a sort) in "An Enemy of the People," Ibsen found a way of making his point in a manner more acceptable to his audiences. By looking at not only the plays but how each was received by the public, teachers/students can better appreciate what Ibsen was trying to do with each successive play.
For all four of these plays the notion of responsibility is primary. In "A Doll's House" Nora Helmer decides to leave her husband because he is unworthy of her love. In "Ghosts," Mrs. Alving has to decide whether she should give her diseased son poison as a mercy killing. In "An Enemy of the People," Dr. Stockmann decides to stay and fight to have the infected baths repaired even after the town ostracizes him. Finally, in "The Wild Duck" the idealist Gregers Werle comes home and destroys a family by insisting the truth be told. A classroom set of this particular volume is relatively inexpensive and provides an excellent case study of the growth of a major writer. Students do not often get the opportunity to read several works by the same writer. Shakespeare is the exception to this rule, but usually students are exposed to different types of plays (comedy, tragedy, history) rather than to a series of consecutively written plays.
