About the Author
Gerald North graduated in physics and astronomy. He was a former teacher and lecturer in both subjects and a former Guest Observer at the Royal Greenwich Observatory, and is now a freelance astronomer and writer. He is a long-term member of the British Astronomical Association and has served in several senior posts in their lunar section. He has published widely over the years and is the author of this book's popular companion volume Observing the Moon: The Modern Astronomer's Guide, 2nd Edition (Cambridge University Press, 2007).

A good primer for amateur astronomers, although might be a bit advanced for true beginners

"Observing the Solar System" is a fairly complete (a relative term when discussing the Solar System) guide for an amateur astronomer to start viewing the night sky. It has a strong focus on planets and comets, and not as much attention to galaxies and some of the Messier objects. There are twelve chapters:

1. Earth and Sky - half is about basic geology of the Earth and the other half discusses meteors.

2. Moon and planet observer's hardware - this whole chapter is about what type of telescope setup you need for observing the moon and planets.

3. The Solar System framed - discusses CCD cameras for amateur astrophotography

4. Stacking up the Solar System - this whole chapter is about "focus stacking" with astrophotography to get better images.

5. Our Moon - This is one of the better chapters of the book and is very comprehensive for an amateur lunar observer. It discusses lunar characteristics and what you can expect when viewing the moon. I found some very useful info in it that I didn't already know.

6. Mercury and Venus - You're not going to see much in a telescope when observing these two planets due to their size and apparent magnitude, but it discusses their orbits and phases and has some interesting info on transits.

7. Mars - a decent chapter on observing through a telescope, and with the naked eye, as well as the orbit of Mars and its moons.

8. Jupiter - One of the better chapters of the book and that I've found in an amateur astronomer's guide, with information on observing the planet and its moons.

9. Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune - Half about Saturn and its moons, and half about Uranus and Neptune.

10. Small Worlds - Asteroids, Pluto, binocular observing, asteroid photography, and photometry (which I feel is a bit dry and could have been left out).

11. Comets - 1/3 discusses comet behavior, and the rest is about comet photography and photometry.

12. Our daytime star - solar characteristics, tips for safe solar viewing without setting your eyeballs on fire, and sunspots.

A Serious Work By A Serious Authority

Ths is not a shallow work produced by a an amateur authority for a transient audience. This is an impressive, detailed work that is meant to be part of a home astronomer's library. It is well illustrated with black and white and colour plates together with appropriate drawings. As the title indicates, it deals with more than just the planets. Comets, asteroids and other "local" phenomena are also covered. I must admit that the occasional mathematical formula, while not overwhelming, did bring on a cold sweat. The appendices on collimating a telescope and polar alignement are quite dated. You can get easier, if less theoretical diections on "YouTube".

Good intermediate level book for amateur astronomers

Planetary observation can be highly addicted but equally highly frustrating. A productive visual or imaging session requires a seemingly impossible confluence of vital factors such as atmospheric stability, accurate optical collimation, proper polar alignment, thermal equilibrium of optics, etc. For folks who live in parts of the country where the jet stream is prevalent, observation can be quite frustrating. This book, written by an experienced and knowledgeable astronomer, does a good job in balancing observational, imaging, and foundational information for intermediate amateurs interesting in taking a more serious step in this area. Three things that would have been nice to mention more: 1. Thermal equilibrium of a telescope. It takes a bit of effort to get a Schmidt-Cass or Maksutov to get into thermal equilibrium. Taking it out of storage with a huge thermal differential with the ambient will guarantee a pretty much useless night of productive observation. Bringing huge optical surfaces from a cold indoors into a warm night will likewise create a huge amount of dew on the optical surfaces. 2. There are, for those starting in the hobby, very nice iPhone observational apps that will help one locate the planets. Other programs will actually show correct real-time features that will allow one to correlate to what is being observed. 3. The choice of a proper equatorial mount and tripod are as vital as selecting the optics. Too often, people get stymied by cheap shaky import mounts and tripods with low stability and poor tracking. Some of these can be surprisingly expensive but useless for serious work.

All in all, a good book and recommended read.

I have a hard time sometimes re-reading school books. I bought this one and another (Acts--Holman NT Commentary). I find it rather difficult to even read the Holman book thru once but I find myself returning to Kent's book on quite a few occaisions.

Lovely and Timely Tale

"The Lioness Pastry Cook" is unlike anything I have ever read. It is at once a tale within a tale of space people, who hear a story, told entirely in rhyme. This is an allegorical tale of how one family in Africa, after suffering misfortunes find a way not only to help themselves out of their despair, but reach outward to all (be they creatures or humans).
I think this speaks quite clearly to the need for humanity to embrace one another, and how a future society might look upon us now, with so many issues such as greed, hunger, the ongoing environmental calamity that is global warming, bigotry, religious zealotry and wonder how we will survive. It is because the story is a tale in which the family is personified by the lions, and their ability to adapt (they are running out of meat and so they start eating vegetables and fruit) that it can feel safer for humans to hear its message. This is of selflessness, and compassion, which will, if these ideals foment, create a more equal society in which all cannot only survive but live without fear or pain.
I commend Mr. La Franca for tackling these issues in a way which is both poetic in style (rather Felliniesque in its manner with the actors, dancers, drums running as narrators throughout the piece) and yet poignant. He had a purpose, which was to, without preaching as a stern task master, entertain leaving with the audience something upon which to chew. A very tasty treat indeed, I recommend this highly and ask others (since it is a very fast paced read) to re-read it to take in all its intricacies for they are sweet, sour and meaty indeed.

An enchanting and meaningful work of magic

A very original book like no other that I've ever read. Its amusing poetic style with the suggestive breaks of drumming between verses makes its reading easy to follow and also stimulates the reader's mind in imagining the scenes as they are narrated. Its endeavour of raising awareness and aid for environmental issues is praiseworthy. All summed up to me it seems a true work of magic

Required for risk management pros

Absolutely essential for participants in any risk management program who want to get beyond faking things up with 3 level matrices. Quantitative risk analysis requires accuracy, but not absolute precision. This book gives great practical examples and training for getting to as much accuracy as you need for a given application. Study it, and make better decisions for your program.

Great book!

So glad I bought this! I was uncertain when I started, not being a fan of the religious overtones and uncertain if the AA twelve steps could actually be converted. But, thankfully, I was wrong. This book gave me such hope and peace, I was amazed! I would recommend this book for anyone with mood disorders, regardless of religious background.

About the Author
Chadi B. Ghaith is an aspiring new author from the Land of the Phoenix (Lebanon). He was born in Lebanon and attended high school at San Marcos high school in Texas, where he eventually received his high school diploma. He was later admitted to Southern Methodist University, where he received a BA in Communication Arts and Film.

​Upon returning to Lebanon, Chadi's Greek spiritual orientation, in addition to his childhood admiration for the ancient Greek mind, led him to pursue higher education in the field of philosophy at American University of Beirut.

Although he was raised to believe in the divinity of ancient Greek philosophers like Pythagoras, Plato, and Aristotle, and Gnostic Sageslike Hermes Trismegistus, Enoch, and Seth, after more than three years,including six semesters crammed with philosophy courses, he came to realize that the academic field of philosophy had long departed from its glorious Greek origins.

Somehow it had rebelliously evolved (through a sequential thread of whining and groaning) into something that was now more reflective of poetry than it is of philosophy. With all due respect to the field of poetry, Chadi was deeply disappointed by this discovery.

Although he was only two to three courses short of his Master's degree,he decided to forsake his lengthy academic journey and, instead,privately undertake that which made him seek philosophy in the first place, the beauty of the ancient Greek mind.

After many years of studying the masterpieces of these timeless minds on his own, one day he happened to come across a Gnostic resource entitled The Exclusive Fifth Science. The rest, for Chadi, is history.

For more than two decades now, Chadi has been decoding the logic of this unique mind science, and what he has discovered so far is beyond amazing.

Mimadamos is his first attempt at translating the magic of Fifth science into a modern narrative.

Interesting Concept, Poor Execution

I have a lot to say about this book but I’m not going to say it all because I want to focus on having a fair review instead of a ridiculous rant. The first thing I want to start off with is what I liked about this book.

It is very unique; I realize I say this about pretty much every book I review but I think Indie-Authors tend to be unique writers so that’s no surprise. But in all honesty, it is very unique and very original. The concept of Fate being a man who is soon to marry the woman Destiny was enough to catch my interest. Plus, the cover looked spectacular. I just had to read it and, in terms of exceptionalism, this book knocked it out of the park. I won’t call it ‘creative’ but I will say it tackled some interesting concepts in a very different and out-of-the-box style.

I also enjoyed the narration. There was very little dialogue and not very much description but I knew exactly what was happening and I could keep up with the story. There weren’t a lot of ‘big words’ but the style of writing carried a distinct air of sophistication. This book reads like an old classic when, in fact, it was published very recently. So my hat goes off to the author for really demonstrating such expertise in this field. It was inspiring to read such mature writing.

The last thing I enjoyed was the structure of the novel, it was third person narration but it followed multiple characters and really told their separate stories in a great way. I wasn’t hopping from character to character but I knew their stories and I could connect the dots fine enough. Sometimes it gets confusing when you’re writing—or reading—from duel perspectives but I never fell out of line in this novel.

Now, I’ve gone into detail about what I liked so here comes the hard part. What I didn’t like.

For a book with such sophistication and style, it really deserves a higher rating than what I gave it but I’m not one who judges simply on good grammar and narration. I can five-star the crappiest edited novel as long as it holds my interest with the plotline and, unfortunately, this book did not hold my interest very long. It wasn’t a long read but it seemed to drag on. The style of writing was very poetic but it took forever to just get to the point because of how ‘beautifully crafted’ each sentence was, which is just another way to say he put in about ten extra words that didn’t need to be there but they weren’t grammatically incorrect so it was acceptable.

The second thing I disliked was tricky because I did like it but I didn’t like the way it was presented and that was the actual concept of the entire book. Fate and Destiny being alive and in a relationship, cool. Sounds like an old fable being retold in modern times. Except it wasn’t. I was expecting a great story with an underlying philosophical message, instead I got a lengthy—and awkward—philosophical rant with a story somewhere on the side. I felt like the concept had so much potential and it just fell flat.

The last thing I disliked was that this book was presented to me as a Christian Fantasy novel. I feel like this book is not Christian at all. Don’t get me wrong, I am absolutely open to reading books of multiple genres, in fact I probably read Christian Fiction least often. But I don’t like being misled just for a review. I probably would have rated this book higher if I hadn’t cracked it open with the mindset that I was being presented with an epic Christian Fantasy novel. That’s not to say that it didn’t include spiritual concepts but that’s about it.

The inclusion of Fate, Destiny, and a deified figure, which isn’t exactly portrayed as the Christian God, Almighty, doesn’t make a book a Christian Fantasy novel any more than mentioning a burka makes a book Muslim Fiction. This was, perhaps, my biggest issue in that I was told one thing when in fact this book turned out to be something completely different. I would label it as ‘spiritual fiction’ but certainly not ‘Christian Fiction’. Many religions have a focus on some sort of deity they call ‘god’ so having a higher power in your book doesn’t make it the Christian God, Almighty.

Overall, I would say this book is actually a 4 out of 5. But because of personal issues, I rated it lower. It is a very well written and well-planned novel. It takes on an intriguing concept and I think it tells a fairly decent story. Anyone looking for something that will take you out of your comfort zone will enjoy this. If you want to explore some deep thinking and unique concepts, then this book is for you. I would recommend this to adult readers.

Beautiful but dense

Mimadamos was a more involved book than what I was originally expecting. It has a spiritual and biblical premise exploring the concepts of good and evil, heaven and hell, and the beginning and the end of the world. These are questions that we have no answers to, and philosophically are the ones that have had the most time spent on. As such, there are other models to pull from to add to this book. Parts of the story are excerpted from the classic texts “The Exegesis of the Soul” and “The Second Treatise of the Great Seth.” Both explore Gnostic concepts and Exegesis explores the idea that the soul is a woman who fell from perfection. By rejoining with the heavenly father she will be perfected again. The Seth text presents the idea that Jesus didn’t really die on the cross – another man died in his place.

Mimadamos takes these philosophical conundrums and spiritual dichotomies and
presents them around the notion that Fate is a man about to marry the woman Destiny, and we can enter into Fate’s mind. The language is beautiful but dense and could be hard for some people to get into. It takes effort to track who is talking and what is going on. I would recommend this book for people who have an interest in esoteric religions, are familiar with some concepts of Gnosticism and maybe want to learn more or people who want to consider ideas about mythology and religion that they hadn’t thought of before. This was an interesting book and it surely took much effort to write, it just didn’t read like much of a story that moved along with a plot, because there were so many changing viewpoints and not a lot of dialog. Long and often frustrating read

Mimadamos tries very hard to read like an epic - abstract, metaphorical, and involving a long, long personal journey. The problem is that the only aspect of an epic that Mimadamos manages to grasp is the length- the story is so drawn out and so un-engaging it was painful to move through this novel. Characters are named "Destiny" and "Choice", and while I appreciate what Ghaith was trying to accomplish by making these concepts into tangible beings, it just didn't work.
The two most frustrating aspects of this novel were:
First, the language is entirely descriptive. When I say entirely, I mean that 90% of the novel contains no dialogue, no direct thoughts, and no direct actions: all we read are removed descriptions of these things. The result is an undeniably sleep-inducing experience.
Second, the limited dialog that was included completely broke pace with the flowery, "lore-like" language of the rest of the novel. Ghaith goes from long-winded, philosophical sentences such as "What Choice did not know what that in speaking of ego and the fear it inspired, Destiny was really speaking of herself", to speeches like, "You saw the last guy go, so all will be fine. You have to understand that". The breaks are maddening, especially since the novel is hard enough to invest in to begin with.
Can't say I recommend this one unless you are interested in the study of stylistic writing.
