BEAT THE EPIDEMIC OF OBESITY

Here’s a pop quiz for you. When eaten in large amounts, which macronutrient raises your blood levels of saturated fats and triglycerides: protein, fat, or carbohydrate? You’re probably tempted to answer fat. But the correct answer is carbohydrate. Second question: Which of the three lowers your HDL (“good”) cholesterol? Again, the answer is carbohydrate.

In the last four decades, the percentage of overweight American adults and children has ballooned. As Albert Einstein once remarked, “Insanity is doing the same thing over and over, but expecting different results.” In this time frame, the medical and nutritional establishment has told us to follow the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Food Guide Pyramid, skimp on calories, avoid fat, and focus on eating carbohydrate foods. Americans now consume less saturated fat than they did forty years ago but have replaced those calories—and added another 200 a day—with carbohydrates. Clearly, something is seriously wrong with the way we eat.

So has our population become thinner? Quite the contrary! Today, more than 65 percent of American adults are overweight. Likewise, the prevalence of type 2 diabetes has skyrocketed. Are you a part of this statistical nightmare? Or are you at risk of becoming part of it? If so, this book provides the tools to escape that fate. But it’s not just enough to read the words, you must also truly take responsibility for your health. Remodeling your eating habits—like making any major life change—takes commitment.       The latest and best science

      I have hesitated to write a review because I am one of the success stories in this book. However, in light of T. Colin Campbell's unprofessional attack on this book, I believe I must speak up to share my story and the good health that has resulted in my following the Atkins plan. I am nearly 65 years old and have struggled with weight all my life. I've been on many diets including a vegetarian one with little results in either weight loss or improved health. In fact, my health markers were getting worse, and I suffered from arthritis, dry skin and elevated tryglyceride levels. My blood pressure was borderline. Since following the plan outlined in this book, I have lost weight, my arthritis has improved substantially (particularly in my neck and shoulders) and my dry skin (which 2 dermatologists had diagnosed as rosacea) has disappeared. My tryglyceride level dropped remarkably, but more importantly my HDL (the good cholesterol) has gone up and my latest BP was 117/76. I used to wear a size 18 -- now I wear a 6 or 8. All of these results came from following the plan outlined in this book.

      What disturbs me further about T. Colin Campbell is that he has clearly put out a call to his vegan followers to come to the Amazon site and give bad reviews of this book, as he posted this nonsense on his webpage. I don't have a problem with their chosen lifestyle, but I do have a problem with the many deragatory posts that make it clear that they could not have read this book as they have no comprehension of its contents. Shame on them. Using the Amazon review system to grind their vegan axes should not be allowed.

      Contrary to their ravings, the Atkins diet recommends lots of vegetables, a conservative amount of dietary protein and good fats. All recommendations that are supported by recent science. Read Gary Taubes "Good Calories, Bad Calories" or the distinquished works of Dr. Mary Enig. T. Colin Campbell has used this review process to further his own agenda and has encouraged his minions to post here. They disparage the book as well as mouth urban legend lies about Dr. Robert Atkins (a cardiologist, BTW). Anyway, read the book and make your own conclusions. Don't be led astray by these agenda-led and untrue attacks. This 65 year old feels 20-30 years younger!!

      Buy the book, Atkins can change your life

      So fascinated by this book and the Atkins diet. However, I'm still reading this book. It has all the information you need to know about the Atkins diet, or just a low carb/high fat diet. It lists everything from the foods you can and cannot eat, all the way to actual Atkins success stories. I borrowed this book from my grandmother and liked it so much I bought one for my sister who has PCOS, which is a nasty metabolic disorder in women that affects hormones, fertility and insulin levels. Based off the many success stories with this diet and PCOS, I'm highly anticipating her results. I myself have lost 20 lbs in the last 2 months with this diet. I would highly recommend this book to anyone wanting to lose any amount of weight! The pounds are literally just melting off. Cliche, I know. The weight loss is so fast that in a matter of DAYS my stomach had shrunk (can attribute to gastric bloating or water weight loss) and my pant legs were looser on me. I can actually fit in a pair of skinny jeans I outgrew 2 years ago (Thank you baby weight. Sigh.). I used to roll my eyes when people would rant about losing weight because I thought that all diets were BS. I had heard of the Atkins diet years ago but upon mentioning it to my mother she quickly insulted the diet like many others before, and I never gave it a second thought. Then I met my husband and he introduced me to Atkins. He himself had results with a low carb diet and lost about 45 lbs. In the place of business I work at, I have a customer that frequently needs our services. After months and months of conversation he shares with me that he lost 96 lbs on the Atkins diet!! Truly amazing. If you don't buy the book, at least do your research.

      A whole new world..........!

      OK, here's the deal for me. In September I realized I needed to lose around 50 pounds. I went for the low-fat, whole grain, portion control approach; and stuck to it pretty well. In more than seven months I lost 17 pounds and was miserable and frustrated the entire time. In less than two weeks on Atkins, I have lost 8 pounds, and have never felt deprived!

      I am in a situation where I end up eating out a lot. With my other diet, this just made me feel more frustrated. But on this plan, I feel like I can stick with it anywhere. If I'm in a high end place, it's all about the meat/fish and veggies anyway. And if it's a burger joint, I just skip the bun and the fries! The sodium doesn't seem to be an issue, surprisingly.

      For breakfast I have been making 2 egg omlettes with frozen veggies and cheese. Lunch is usually tuna or chicken salad on a bunch of greens/veggies. Dinner is some kind of grilled or broiled meet with asparagus etc. (I throw on some rice pilaf etc. for the rest of the family). I went to Whole Foods today and saw the "prepared foods" section with a whole new eye! I didn't even want to stare at the pizza!

      One of the things that appealed to me most was that exercise is not a core part of this plan. I have a permanent disabling injury that prevents me from just about anything (beyond WII!). It was refreshing to not feel stigmatized for that.

      And I'm even cheating! Shoot me but I really enjoy a glass of wine when I'm done with my day, (or at least my driving). Generally an hour or so before I eat. I've kept that for my sanity the safety of my family. (It's only 4 to 5 carbs!) So I still have around 20 pounds to go. Which no longer sounds so daunting.

      Just losing 8 pounds feels great!

      I respect other people's right to choose, and right to write more mainstream diet books. And I hope that they will respect that I feel like I finally caught a break here!

    Louis Frenzel has been a Technology Editor with Electronic Design magazine since 2000 and covers the wireless, communications, networking and test/measurement fields. He also writes for Wireless System Design Update an online newsletter. Lou has over 25 years of electronic industry experience as an engineer in the geophysical, aerospace and computer fields. Prior to joining ED he was a college professor teaching electronics and semiconductor manufacturing and working on several NSF grants. He holds bachelors and masters degrees in electronics and is author of 19 books on communications, computers and electronics.

    An up to date overview of modern electronic technology

    I'd say this book is definitely not for the seasoned professional. But it's a great book for someone who has at least some background in the electronics field, and who is looking for an overview of modern day electronic technology. For instance, I took my core electronic courses forty-years ago, and with that background I made it through the book without too much trouble. The electronics we now take for granted wasn't even dreamed of in those days. So to me, this book was filled with fascinating material, including a good explanation of how all these newfangled electronic gadgets like the cell phone actually work.

    Cited as the systems approach to learning about electronics, the author approaches each of his topics as a complete unit, rather than an explanation of the individual electronic components and how they operate. So after a brief introduction to simple circuit components like capacitors, resistors, transformers and a little about Ohms Law, the author takes the reader on a fascinating trip through everything from integrated digital logic circuits, and OpAmps, and power supplies, and computers, to cell phones, antennas, and satellites, to wireless networks, LANS and WANS, audio and video and industrial control technology, as well as a bunch of stuff I haven't mentioned. That's a lot of technical information in just 300 hundred pages, so it moves fast and it got a little overwhelming for me in a few places. But I finished the book and I feel that I learned a lot, which was my goal in reading the book in the first place. I recommend this book for anyone interested in an overview of up-to-date modern electronic technology and its applications.

    Too cursory for its own good

    I really wanted to like this book. I come from a background in Computer Science, and have enjoyed dabbling in Electronics, but never had a taste for the hard-core engineering that make up Computer and Electrical Engineering. This book attempts to bridge a gap between basic electrical components and full-fledged electrical systems(TV, computers, Microwaves, etc..). Unfortunately, I don't think it does a good job.

    The first third of the book wallows in the minutia of electronics, covering basic theory like Ohm's Law, electron flow, electromagnets, and the like. But it never goes deep enough for these concepts to make sense. The examples given are too sparse, and there's no context. No equations are given that would allow someone to compute how large a resistor to place in front of an LED to build a christmas light, or how one would actually use an OpAmp in a real circuit. Seemingly complex electrical diagrams of common components are presented, but no indication how to apply those drawing if I wanted to build a circuit. The goal of these early chapters was supposed to present all these basic components, then to assume they are being used in more complex system components later on. Unfortunately, presenting these chapters at all left me more confused than enlightened. Would have been better to skip them entirely, or maybe stick them in an appendix.

    The book moves on to larger things. A chapter is wasted glossing over microcomputers programming. Time is spent with a stub program showing what some syntax might possibly look like for assembly programming a microprocessor circa 1993. Not at all applicable. similar stubs of introduction are given to C and Basic.

    Another chapter on wireless communication includes many facts about antennas, like how they are usually 1/4 the height of the wavelength being broadcast. The book is full of impressive graphics and charts, lots of facts and figures, but none of it is applicable. They are tidbits of knowledge without any indication how to actually use any of it. Why does it matter that Aircraft radios typically operate in the 108-135Mhz band and use AM. I don't feel I actually know anything more. I've consumed a great deal of samples, but nothing in depth, nothing of substance. Junk food for electronics? Maybe.

    A Review of electronics explained

    When I first ordered the book, I thought it would be more of a hands on type manual, something along the lines of what you might find at Radio Shack. But it has a different objective. It is not a technical manual of how to begin to do electronics. The author makes that clear early on. It does a very nice job of providing an overview of basic (and some not so basic) electronics and how it applies to real world applications but not from a project/wire some circuits point of view. It is short of circuit theory (intentionally) and long on descriptives relative to actual applications, for example how an ipod is wired or how cds actually provide music. I recommend it for someone who needs a basic overview of how electronics affects our everyday lives but not for someone wanting to begin a hobby in the area or needs some more technical step by step direction.

    Agile Project Management

    I've purchased many "...for Dummies" books in the past but this is the first one I've actually read cover-to-cover. If you are familiar with the "...for Dummies" series, you know what you're going to get: a nuts and bolts, start with the basics, type of book. Having knowledge of and experience in the traditional waterfall project methodology for software development and delivery, I wanted to learn more about Agile Project Methodology but I wanted to make sure I started with a solid foundation. If your plan is the same as mine, this book fits the bill. It begins with background information (Ch. 1), then the Agile Manifesto and the 12 Agile Principles (Ch. 2) and builds on that each chapter thereafter. Besides the key terms, definitions, project team roles, Agile in practice, etc.... this book delves into topics such as procurement, working with vendors, and project cost and budget considerations specific to Agile projects. If you read from cover-to-cover, you will notice some repetition in the book; intended for those who use the book as a reference - read a section here, chapter there, skip ahead. I didn't mind it. In fact, I used it to my learning advantage. I feel confident in what I have learned here, so much so, I feel I am ready to move on and tackle heftier Agile-specific topics

    Very Informative - just like Mark's in-person classes

    I was able to attend one of Mark's Certified Scrum Master classes through his company, Platinum Edge, and it was such a great course I had to buy this Agile Project Management book to follow. Similar to Mark's in-person teaching style, this book was extremely informative and easy to understand. I also bought Scrum for Dummies and am excited to read that too!

    I read this book prior to taking an Agile class from the author. And I'm glad I did, since his 16-hour lecture/workshop was jam-packed with concepts that were new to me. Once I understood it, I realized that Agile is the way of the software industry. Yet it can be applied to most human endeavors with good results.

    Keep by the bed

    Pregnant and wanting to stay healthy in a gentle holistic manner that is completely supportive of your balance and your baby's well being? Susun Weed is a respected and highly knowledgeable herbalist of many many years. [Check out her Wise Woman University to learn so much more...not about her but FROM her.]
    I birthed all four of my children at home without drugs, without extreme measures, and even through some tough outer stressors....with Susun Weed's The Childbearing Year on my bedside table, the kitchen counter, in the diaper bag, the car... basically "to hand" because one never knows when the wisdom of an experienced elder might be needed, especially when pregnant.
    Susun uses a very readable style to keep your interest. And of course the book is arranged so that you can go straight to the section pertinent to your current circumstances. Susun's writing style invokes a calm sense of balance by setting up the many possible solutions in a logical and progressive pathway through each section or condition discussed. The reader gets to stay with the simplest solutions or can choose to move on to more powerful solutions. She is vigilant to sharing responsibly, so that you the reader can make the decision of trying alternatives and/or when you should bring conditions to your primary provider's attention.
    I wish I could express this more succinctly...all I can say is: if you prefer to avoid overly pharmaceutical measures and invasive procedures and are choosing to maintain your good health all the way through, from pre-conception to pregnancy to birth and on to the "fourth trimester" of breast feeding and returning your body back to pre-pregnancy state, this book is an excellent guide to keep you on track with all the details. And the writing is like sitting with your grandmother sharing stories while being very informative. Susun is a brilliant and experienced teacher.

    Amazing book! Now that I've had the chance to read this book, I can say that every woman should own one of these books. Especially if they are interested or already active in natural remedies. This book is packed with a whole lot of information. Different chapters in each woman's life comes with a different set or hormonal challenges, as well as nutritional requirements. If you want to listen to your body and take care of it the right way, the natural way, then I would buy this book. It's a great place to start and it's packed with a lot of information, that would take a whole lot of time to research individually. Great for my herbal resource collection. Very well written and easy to understand.

    Susun Weed comes from a practicing stand point of using single herbs in hot water infusions and in food. Her emmenogoues ( bringing on menses or labor) in tincture form are recommended for helping labor. Herbal medicine is old medicine and it takes decades to learn so I think some newer herbal medicine people are taking more precaution due to the newer forms available in pills and tinctures. Today's contraindications may be due to using standardized herbal medicine which lacks the safety buffers that whole plant medicine has allowed us. Many are using herbs more like prescription drugs today. Susun Weed is about using safe and nourishing herbs like nettles and alfalfa and oats. Heroic herbs like blue cohosh when labor is difficult.

    MacGregor Kniseley began his 35-year career in education as a teacher employed in non-school environmental education programs. Next, he taught for ten years in elementary and middle schools. Since 1990 he has been Professor of Elementary Education at Rhode Island College. He conducts a practical, interactive workshop-style course called CURR 480 Winning a Teaching Position in Any Job Market. Students learn about the job search and hiring process, how to develop cover letters, r�sum�s, and hiring portfolios and how to improve their interview skills. And, students engage in mock job interviews with PreK-12 school personnel and college faculty who provide feedback.
