Very Inclusive Content

This is a nicely inclusive collection of philosophical material from a variety of world sources and with a good eye toward gender representation, organized by topic. If that sounds like something that should go without saying, you haven't looked very critically at most philosophy source textbooks.

At least one thing needs refining in future editions, however. The romanization of Chinese names and terms is inconsistent throughout, sometimes mixing Pinyin and Wade-Giles. That's an easy fix, so I hope it gets done.

About the Author
Lara Vapnyar moved from Moscow to Brooklyn in 1994. Knowing very little English, she quickly picked up the language and soon began writing in it. She is the author of two story collections, There are Jews in My House and Broccoli and Other Tales of Food and Love, and a novel, Memoirs of a Muse. She lives in New York City with her family.

Reinterpreting the stories of life

The Scent of Pine offers the reader a slice from a woman's life. Lena (an academic who teaches at a community college) might be too dreary for some readers, but the novel offers a valuable glance at her (dreary) life. Fortunately, the novel is brief and the dreariness is partially offset by Lena's lively stories about her job in a Soviet Union summer camp.

The novel takes place over the course of a few days as Lena tries to "solve the mystery of her present unhappiness." Twenty years earlier, when Lena was a student in the Soviet Union who just met her friend Inka, happiness seemed inevitable. Now, having lived with her husband Vadim in the United States for ten years, happiness seems impossible, particularly when she attends a conference to give a talk on Sex Education in Soviet Russia that nobody attends.

Lena meets Ben at the conference. Ben offers to drive Lena back to Boston and then to his leaky cabin in Maine. Along the way, Lena tells Ben (and thus the reader) the stories of her life. In the process, she explores the nature of happiness, questions why the men in her life (including Vadim) have never made her happy and, as she starts to see her stories from Ben's perspective, begins to reinterpret her past. In turn, Ben tells his stories to Lena. But all stories come to an end and, when a comfortable intimacy begins to connect them, Lena wonders about the ending of the story of Ben and Lena.

Late in the novel, Lena learns the truth (or at least a different perspective of truth) behind some of the stories she's been telling Ben about the Soviet camp. Lena is forced again to reinterpret her own stories while the reader learns how the stories connect to her present life. The connection is meant to be surprising and it probably is, but only because Laura Vapnyar conceals a fact from the reader (and Ben) for the sole purpose of creating a surprise near the novel's end.

To some extent, The Scent of Pine is a familiar love story as Ben awakens feelings in Lena that she can't recall experiencing with Vadim. The story is slight but it has the virtue of honesty. Fear of love is the novel's best theme. Lena fears love, not only because love hurts, but because it gives her the power to hurt someone else. Ben says: "practically every single thing that we do is either to distract ourselves from what is wrong with our lives, or to please somebody else, or to shield ourselves from reproaches and guilt" which causes us to live in cocoons, but emerging from the cocoon inevitably hurts someone, so we retreat to its safety and loneliness. It's a sad but not uncommon way of living and Vapnyar depicts it convincingly.

As a slice of life, The Scent of Pine lacks the heft of a more substantial novel. Despite its limitations and the rather colorless scenes that take place in the present, Vapnyar's prose style is graceful and the novel offers significant insight into its characters without overreaching. Those benefits make The Scent of Pine worth reading.

When Simon & Schuster offered me a review copy of The Scent of Pine by Lara Vapnyar, I was intrigued. Partially because the author is originally from my neighbouring country Russia and partially because of the blurb of the book. The plot seemed promising.

The Scent of Pine tells a story about Lena who is closing 40 and she has reached a point in her life when she needs to let go some parts of her past and to take a retrospective journey. Her marriage is a mess, she has difficulties with settling in at her new country and her work life is dissatisfying as well.

During a conference she meets Ben, an artist gone academic. There is an immediate attraction between Ben and Lena and when Lena is offered to take a ride back to Boston with Ben, they end up at Ben's cabin. The more time they spend with each other, the more secrets are being revealed. Lena opened up and discovers herself through Ben.

If you are looking for a book filled with wild romance and action, you will be disappointed. It's not that kind of book. It's definitely about passion and love, yes! It's also a story about intimacy. But mostly about sexual liberation and letting go of the past. It's a story about two people discovering themselves through each other. And even though the spacing is slow, it's beautiful!

The story flows like a river. The pacing is in my opinion slow, but interesting. It seems like the time stops while the intimacy of relationships are folded out in front of the reader. Of course, since I was born and raised in the Soviet Union, I might be able to relate to many things what Lena is sharing with Ben. But that's not the most important reason why I liked the book. I savoured the writing style, it was humorous and little bittersweet. Lara Vapnyar is a sharp storyteller leaving lot of thoughts in between the lines. I loved that there was space for my own thoughts while reading.

Slow and Beautiful

“The Scent of Pine” by Lara Vapnyar tells a story about Lena who at 40 has reached a point in her life when she needs to let go, and to take stock, of her past. Her marriage is a train wreck, she has adjustment issues with settling into her new country and her professional life leaves much to be desired. 

While at a conference she meets Ben, an artist and academic. There is an immediate attraction between Ben and Lena. Lena takes a ride back to Boston with Ben but they end up at Ben's cabin. The more time they spend with each other, the more secrets are revealed. Lena opens up and discovers herself through Ben. 

If you are looking for a book filled with wild romance and action, you will be disappointed. It's not that kind of book. It's definitely about passion and love, yes! It's also a story about intimacy. But mostly about sexual liberation and letting go of the past. It's a story about two people discovering themselves through each other. And even though the spacing is slow, it's beautiful!

An Indispensable Guide For Those Who Love Musicals!

I've been hooked on musicals since I saw my first one on Broadway back in the 1960's. It's obvious that John Kenrick is even more so. His knowledge and expertise on this art form clearly comes through in his conversational writing style. The who, when, where, what, why and how of the various musicals through the ages are truly informational gems. This is a great book that allows the reader to peek behind the curtain while studying musical theatre's evolution. It is a great source book for those of us who aren't in musical theatre and wish to test our knowledge of what we have seen or know; as well as to track down totally unfamiliar musicals and discover what's been missed. I always thought of the musical as having come into existence in the last 100 or so years. Boy was I wrong! "Musical Theatre-A History" is an excellent read and reference!

I am using this book to give supplementrey information to my Broadway Musicals class for seniors. Interesting background information and anecdotes are intertwined in this book. If you want to learn more specific details about the history of Broadway, this book is for you. I like that Kendricks starts the book with a defintion of a musical because shows on Broadway were song and dance reviews, and musical comedies in its early history but evolved into much more over the years.

Indispensable for GRE prep, but the individual books only cost $33, vs. $38 for this bundle.

I'm a Harvard Grad, 99% GRE Scorer (337, 168Q / 169V, 5.5 AWA) and GRE private tutor since 2002. I can strongly recommend these official ETS guides for anyone serious about performing well on the GRE, but the 3 individual books included in the Super Power Pack are currently more affordable to purchase separately ($33) than through this bundle ($38).

Ultimately, you will need these 3 books for an optimal GRE preparation, because the included practice tests / questions are the real deal. The fact that Princeton and Kaplan GRE preparation books--full of fluff, filler, willful ignorance of the GRE official materials, and typos--sell better than the GRE Super Power Pack is an absolute shame. After many years of receiving scant practice material from ETS, I am relieved to say that ETS has now provided enough official materials for a nearly full preparation for the GRE, so the purchase of other learning and strategy guides can be kept to a minimum.

I say "nearly" full because 2 CATs (computer adaptive tests) is not enough. The physical books are a nice asset, as are the 2 (included) paper-based practice tests, but for a computer adaptive test, you have to spend lots of time preparing on a computer. For this purpose I prefer to spend an additional $39 to purchase 6 (synthetic) GRE Computer Adaptive Tests (CATs) from Manhattan Prep. No, they are not real GREs, but they are still helpful for practice with the computer-adaptive format, and are of higher quality than most other imitation GREs. You can also try one test for free before committing through the Manhattan website (google "GRE Practice Test & Free Score Analysis - Manhattan Prep").

It is worth noting that this is primarily a book for practice, not learning. The answer explanations in these books can sometimes be severely lacking, or in the case of the PowerPrep tests, nonexistent, which is part of why hiring a professional tutor can be helpful. However, for the disciplined and resourceful self-studier, these three books, the 2 (invaluable!) PowerPrep II CATs, a good vocab guide or two, a strategy guide (avoid Kaplan and Princeton--I prefer Manhattan, Magoosh, Barron’s and McGraw-Hill) and some third-party CATs should do the trick.

For those of you unfamiliar with the GRE, here is some basic information about the exam:

-The GRE is primarily a computer-based test. Only 2% of test-takers choose the paper option.
-You can take the test up to 5 times a year, and every 21 days. Scores are valid for 5 years.
-GRE has an option called “ScoreSelect” that allows you to select only your best score and send that score only to the graduate programs of your choice.
-The GRE offers a diagnostic service that allows you to view your performance on the test, including which questions you answered correctly/incorrectly, and how long they took you to answer. You cannot see the actual questions, however.

STRUCTURE OF THE COMPUTER-BASED GRE:

1) “Analyze an Issue” Writing Task - 30 mins
2) “Analyze an Argument” Writing Task - 30 mins
3) Verbal or Quantitative Section - 30 or 35 mins*
4) Verbal or Quantitative Section - 30 or 35 mins*

(10-MINUTE BREAK)

5) Verbal or Quantitative Section - 30 or 35 mins*
6) Verbal or Quantitative Section - 30 or 35 mins*
7) Verbal or Quantitative Section - 30 or 35 mins*

*The order of the Quant and Verbal sections varies. One of the Verbal or Quant sections will be unscored, or a research section.

The GRE is scored from 130 to 170 in both sections, for a total of 340 points. An average score is about 300/340, and you will receive your multiple-choice score immediately after the test is completed. Because there are 40 questions in both Quant and Verbal, you can essentially add the number 130 to your number of questions answered correctly to get an estimate of your final score in each section. HOW TO USE THE FREE GRE POWERPREP SOFTWARE FROM ETS:

Test preview tool: This will allow you to try some practice questions as well as two essays.

Timed Practice Test #1: This is your first official GRE practice test, and should be taken at the beginning of your preparation to establish a baseline score.

Timed Practice Test #2: This is your only other real GRE practice test, so save it for the last few weeks of your preparation, as an unbiased, trustworthy measure of your progress.

Untimed Practice Test: This is exactly what it sounds like, but I don’t recommend taking it because it’s exactly the same as Practice Test #1. After you’ve taken Practice Test #1, however, feel free to use the Untimed Test for additional practice on the tricky ones.

The test preview tool is simply meant to help get you familiar with the test and software interface, not to mimic the actual timing of the test. The test preview tool provides 7 verbal questions in 30 minutes, which is 4.3 minutes per question, and 11 quantitative questions in 35 minutes, which is 3.1 minutes per question. By comparison, on the actual GRE, you only have 1.5 minutes per question on both the Quant and Verbal sections.

To take a diagnostic test, click “Timed Practice Test 1” or “Timed Practice Test 2.”

There is a row of buttons at the bottom of the software that says “Start Test / Resume Test / Review Answers:”

Start Test = resets any old tests (WARNING! Be very careful not to click this button by accident--many students have made this mistake) and starts a new test. Because pressing just one wrong button on this test can delete all of your previous results, I recommend taking frequent screenshots, especially of your review screen, which lists all of your correct and incorrect responses. For your screenshots, use either the "Print Screen" (Windows Key + PrtScn) button on a PC or (Shift + Command + 3) on a Mac.

Resume Test = pick up the last test from where you left off.

Review Answers = review your performance on the test, section by section (you cannot go back once you've completed a section without exiting and reviewing again).

However it is best for practice but not so much for learning new materials. It is essential however so i would recommend buying at least the main book.
