Einstein's Cosmos: How Albert Einstein's Vision Transformed Our Understanding of Space and Time (Great Discoveries), by Michio Kaku

In paperback for the centenary of the discovery of relativity, "a fresh and highly visual tour through Einstein's astonishing legacy" (Brian Greene).

The year 2005 marks the 100th anniversary of the publication of the paper that launched Einstein's career, made E=mc2 famous, and ushered in a revolution in science—the paper that announced the theory of special relativity. And there's no better short book that explains just what Einstein did than Einstein's Cosmos. Keying Einstein's crucial discoveries to the simple mental images that inspired them, Michio Kaku finds a revealing new way to discuss these ideas, and delivers an appealing and always accessible introduction to Einstein's work.

From Scientific American
Thanks to Kaku's insight (he is a theoretical physicist) and his flair for explaining dense scientific concepts (he is a best-selling author), this brief book weaves Einstein's life and work into a seamless, hard-to-put-down narrative. The organizing metaphor is how Einstein thought in terms of simple physical pictures--speeding trains, falling elevators, moving clocks. Excellent for the neophyte or readers who want to refresh their knowledge about Einstein without being talked down to or bored.

Editors of Scientific American

From Booklist
Recent popular works about Einstein have magnified select details of his life, such as his tempestuous marriage to Mileva Maric (Einstein in Love, by Dennis Overbye, 2000) or his FBI file (The Einstein File, by Fred Jerome [BKL Ap 1 03]). Such topics are reduced to paragraphs in Kaku's presentation, for Einstein's life ranks second to his science here. Accordingly, Kaku divides his narrative into the three great segments of Einstein's scientific arc: the theory of special relativity in 1905; the theory of general relativity in 1916; and the balance of Einstein's intellectual life. The latter was spent searching for a unified field theory and saw the rise of his phenomenal celebrity, which his peers regarded as a dubious dissipation of genius. However, such lamentations were premature, according to Kaku, who explicates recent discoveries that show Einstein was only audaciously ahead of his scientific time, as usual. An expert in quantum mechanics and string theory, Kaku is an equally able popular writer, vividly evoking the pictorial imagination behind Einstein's revolutionary thinking. Gilbert Taylor

"Kaku enables the reader to see and think as Einstein did, leading us to a simpler, more complete understanding of several of the most important scientific ideas of our time."

An easy read.
By Bill Oterson
The professor, Michio Kaku, has easily become one of my favorite authors. That Einstein was the greatest scientist of the past century there's no doubt. And the author in addition to being a physicist is able to explain, in a warm, and caring way, how Einstein pictured, in his mind, what eventually became his theory of special relativity. But there's more; Prof. Kaku provides us a glimpse of the life, thoughts, frustrations, and accomplishments of Einstein the man as well. An easy, and interesting read for sure.

A crystal-clear window into Einstein's world
By Jeremy M. Harris
In this small book Prof. Kaku has created a marvelously entertaining and easy-to-read biography of the scientist whose very name has, somewhat illogically, become synonymous with any and all flavors of genius. As a physicist himself, Kaku enriches the narrative with lucid explanations and personal scientific judgments. He consistently shows a sure hand for striking a nice balance between the extremes of expecting too much, or too little, from the general reader.

The author describes vividly the many fascinating aspects of Einstein's life, including a brief obsession with religion at 11, an uneasy relationship with conventional education, difficulty finding a job, a stint as a patent examiner combined with startlingly original contributions to physics, escape to America from an increasingly Nazified Germany, the triumph of General Relativity, and finally life as a scientific elder statesman at Princeton, doggedly chasing the elusive unified field theory and insisting to the end that the intrinsically probabilistic quantum theory he helped establish could not represent ultimate reality.

Woven into the narrative by Kaku the biographer are many valuable insights from Kaku the physicist. For instance, he counters the popular misconception that relativity brought classical physics crashing down, and that Newton's equations were suddenly revealed as useless or wrong. Relativity did perform the astonishing feat of reducing classical dynamics to a special case, but it is an exceedingly important case which is still used daily by engineers and scientists around the world. In the author's words (p. 65), "...for everyday velocities, Newton's laws are perfectly fine." Kaku contrasts Einstein's accomplishments with today's physics in some interesting ways, including a remark on page 224 proposing that the encyclopedic Standard Model of quantum particle behavior is, despite its predictive success, "...perhaps one of the ugliest theories ever proposed in science." So much for the notion that truth and beauty always go hand in hand.

The author provides an edifying resolution of the famous "twin paradox" by emphasizing that although the relative velocity histories of the moving and stationary twins must be symmetrical and indistiguishable, their histories as recorded by separate accelerometers attached to each twin would be very different. The traveling twin encounters the time stretching effect of large velocity changes with respect to inertial space, hence returns younger than her stay-at-home sibling. The key is to recognize that the required accelerations move the problem out of the limited realm of special relativity.

The book's story line skillfully blends Einstein's professional life with illuminating vignettes of his nonscientific side. For instance, he was not an unqualified pacifist and supported the use of force when challenged by an enemy, such as the German/Japanese alliance in World War II, which pursued destruction of life as an end in itself. Occasionally Einstein could appear shockingly naive, as when he suggested locating the Jewish state in a country such as Peru to avoid replaying the "promised land" conflicts described so vividly in the Old Testament. Odd as it seems, this proposal was consistent with Einstein's way of looking at things, which supported some aspects of Zionism but simply could not countenance any claim to supernatural land grants.

I found only two drawbacks: First, the absence of illustrations was a letdown, especially since Einstein was known for thinking in pictures. Second, lack of an index is frustrating in any non-fiction book, and especially in one as good as this.

Among the Best Books on Einstein and his Works
By Michael Wischmeyer
Michio Kaku, a respected theoretical physicist at City College of New York, has created an outstanding examination of Einstein's life and technical accomplishments, certainly among the best books on Einstein that I have encountered. Einstein's Cosmos targets the layman and as such it avoids mathematics, and yet I am quite certain that it will appeal to technically inclined readers also. Michio Kaku's explanations of Einstein's monumental work, especially the Special Theory of Relativity and his General Theory of Relativity, are remarkably clear and will be readily understood by nearly all readers.

I was especially fascinated by Kaku's analysis of Einstein's later efforts to unify gravity and electromagnetics. He argues persuasively that much of Einstein's unification efforts, almost always dismissed by writers and biographers as irrelevant and misdirected, has in recent decades pointed a new generation of physicists toward new breakthroughs and discoveries. Einstein's vision was decades ahead of most of his contemporaries. His final quest may have been unsuccessful, but his legacy remains vibrant and highly influential.

Einstein's Cosmos : How Albert Einstein's Vision Transformed Our Understanding of Space and Time was published 2004 in the Great Discoveries Series. I also highly recommend another title in this series, Incompleteness: The Proof and Paradox of Kurt Godel by Rebecca Goldstein. Godel was Einstein's closest intellectual companion during Einstein's later years at the Institute for Advanced Studies at Princeton.

Decent art companion but not as flamboyant as other Marvel artbooks
By Parka
[[VIDEOID:d3c8d4f349a74296e0dc7d25825eda2c]]Ant-Man's artbook has a similar presentation style like the earlier Marvel film artbooks that came before. As usual, the large hardcover comes with a slipcase. I'm glad to get this a local bookstore because it saved me some shipping cost to offset the higher than usual price of Marvel movie artbooks. The book comes in at 256 pages and it's filled with concept art and commentary from the staff and artists.

The character designs are for Ant-Man, Yellowjacket, Wasp, Hank Pym who are the main characters, and also several pages of art for the different types of ants. Environment designs are for Pym's residence, the secure room at Pym's basement, Pymtech and that's about all. Then there are some pages of storyboards, and a handful of other artworks for props. The main bulk, like 80 percent of the book, are the character designs and the scene paintings.

The Ant-Man designs are pretty cool. While cool, I feel they aren't really iconic. They look like suits worn by sci-fi pilots. Yellowjacket is visually more interesting, at least there are those claw-things coming out from the back. The ants that are carrying interesting tech accessories are rather cute.

Most of the scene paintings are of Ant-Man in some sort of action, whether he's carrying stacks of dollar bills or facing off with huge ants. To create the illusion of something small, or making something appear in macro mode, a lot of background blurring is used. That's to simulate the depth of field effect of camera lens that are used to take macro shot. It does work well the convey the miniature size. However, a lot of artworks have that blurred out effect so if you're someone who likes to see details, then this might be a shortcoming.

The main problem I have would be that many images are printed a bit too dark. Maybe they are drawn too dark to begin with. But it's really difficult to make out the details when it's too dark to see clearly. This is a similar problem with Thor: The Dark World's artbook. Another small issue is some images are blown up too big resulting in pixelation.

It's a good artbook, just that the character designs aren't that strong or striking when compared to other illustrious members of Avengers. Overall, I feel that it lacks the oomph of something special that would make this book even better.

4 out of 5 stars.

Solid production, but underwhelming
By J'aime
I have all the MCU Art Of books, so I didn’t hesitate to preorder Ant-Man when it was announced. Now that I’ve received it, I have to say it’s not as impressive as the other Phase 2 books.

Part of the issue, I think, is that the story takes place on Earth and Scott Lang is just a “regular guy.” There’s not much need for “world-building.” Some time is spent on Hank Pym’s house, and I admit I missed a lot of the details while watching the film, but it’s just not as interesting as Tony Stark’s workshop/house or anything about Asgard, let alone GOTG. There’s actually a couple pages devoted to the safe door that Scott Lang breaks into – not exactly exciting material.

Since the environment has little to offer, most of the book is focused on the design of the suits: Ant-Man’s, Yellowjacket’s, both Wasps. There was a lot of excellent concept art here, but again, it pales when compared to the work that was done for Iron Man or his Iron Legion. Most of the book is filled with double-page spreads of concept art of Ant-Man, and storyboards.

A couple things that did stand out in the book were the discussion of how to render things from an ant’s eye view and the ants themselves. There’s a page devoted to each species of ant, why they chose that species and how they translated them to film. I enjoyed this section a lot. How to render the ants’ perspective was also cool. How would normal objects look from such a small scale? How do you render backgrounds that they are recognizable without having any detail?

Overall, this is a nice production, with the beautiful high-quality paper and matching slipcase. However, the content is just a little underwhelming. Recommended to those collecting the series, but not for one-off purchases unless you’re a die-hard Ant-Man fan.

Continuing the solid line of Marvel movie art books.
By mook201
Like many people I'm sure, when Marvel announced they were making an Ant-Man movie my initial reaction was "huh, really"? Of course Marvel went on to create a great movie filled with action and humor and introduce a great character to their cinematic universe. This book shows a bit of the road they took to get there.
Like the other books in the Marvel movie art series this comes in a really nice slipcase and is really high quality. Inside you get concept art for the various suits, characters, locations, and tech you'll find in the movie. You also get commentary from the artists and designers so you can see how the final product materialized. One thing that is rather interesting is that you get multiple artists working on the same thing. For example there may be three different concept artists working on the suit for Yellowjacket so it's interesting to see how those differ and what elements are taken from each one for the final design.

Practice makes perfect
By Pacerfan9
I wanted to leave a review to say thanks to the authors. This book is exactly what I needed and is one of the best purchases I have made in my networking career. I passed the CCNA one year ago and I am continuously trying to a clearer understanding of Cisco networking and more skilled in my career. For me the repetition in this book is great for practicing and learning new concepts along the way. All of the other Cisco networking books I have read were focused on concepts (and rightfully so) along with one lab for each topic (for me that was never enough). I plan to pursue the CCNP but before I go down that road I wanted to make sure I have solid understanding of CCNA level material, this book definitely helped. I have purchased the authors CCNP ROUTE and recently released 101 CCNP Labs book and have been very pleased with the material I have glanced at. Nothing comes for 10 bucks in Cisco networking, except this book. BUY IT.

Excellent lab book but with a few typos
By Raymond Raya
While studying for your CCNA, there comes a time where you need to get some hands on with equipment. Some prefer live equipment, others simulators or rack rental time. Whatever path you choose, you'll definitely want to invest in this book!

I took the self-study route and have invested in a few routers and a couple switches but wanted a solid lab book that would help me prepare for my exam. There are plenty of free materials online but I wanted a hard copy that I could take with me and accidentally stumbled upon this book. [...] While shipping took a little longer than expected, I was pleasantly surprised when it finally arrived.

The labs are completed on modest equipment and, at the most, with 3 to 4 routers and a couple switches. The labs start off with the basics: vlans, STP, etc. then naturally progress to more advanced topics. There are a couple labs which, while not directly related to the exam, shed light on areas of IOS that I never knew existed. Learning how to create macros and alias commands are a couple tidbits that I was excited to learn about. Also, the book helped expand my knowledge of IOS and the use of subinterfaces and loopback interfaces to mimic extra subnets. The authors use of different routing protocols on multiple subinterfaces gave me another perspective on how much can be accomplished with just a couple routers and a single cable!

I've made my way through the first 60 labs and will continue them until I've completed them all. I know that I will be well prepared come test day thanks to the guidance of this book. I would like to point out that there are a few grammatical errors and instances where the diagrams used in a given lab are not 100% correct. If you've come this far along in your studies, you should be able to spot them and make the necessary changes on the fly. Even with a few minor blemishes, this book shines bright. If you're in the market for a lab book that will test your knowledge, please give this book a try.

Great content but difficult to navigate efficiently in the Kindle version.
By M. Watson
The labs and the lab solutions are in different sections of the Kindle book. So to check your work, or follow the guided part of the lab you have to go to Table Of Contents, then search for the lab solution that corresponds with the lab you are working on (and the solutions are only listed by lab number in the table of contents, not title, like the labs . . . ). Ideally, they would have had a hyperlink on each lab directly to the solution. Or followed each lab directly with the solution sequentially. Nice book, but difficult to navigate. Makes it nearly impossible to gather any kind of momentum.

Food and Health in Early Modern Europe: Diet, Medicine and Society, 1450-1800, by David Gentilcore

Food and Health in Early Modern Europe is both a history of food practices and a history of the medical discourse about that food. It is also an exploration of the interaction between the two: the relationship between evolving foodways and shifting medical advice on what to eat in order to stay healthy. It provides the first in-depth study of printed dietary advice covering the entire early modern period, from the late-15th century to the early-19th; it is also the first to trace the history of European foodways as seen through the prism of this advice.

David Gentilcore offers a doctor's-eye view of changing food and dietary fashions: from Portugal to Poland, from Scotland to Sicily, not forgetting the expanding European populations of the New World. In addition to exploring European regimens throughout the period, works of materia medica, botany, agronomy and horticulture are considered, as well as a range of other printed sources, such as travel accounts, cookery books and literary works. The book also includes 30 illustrations, maps and extensive chapter bibliographies with web links included to further aid study.

Food and Health in Early Modern Europe is the essential introduction to the relationship between food, health and medicine for history students and scholars alike.

Review

“Social history done well (unequivocally the case here) is a pleasure to read. Views of food, medicine, and societal practice confected in the cauldron of Europe’s early modern period could easily, in less scholarly and competent hands, have produced a concoction intellectually difficult to digest. The author’s recipe for avoiding this is simple but skillfully executed. Two initial chapters divide the period surveyed (c.1450–c.1650; c.1650–c.1800) to clarify the shifting views of diet and medicine. In brief, the revival of Galen’s emphasis on dietary regimen and prevention (renascent as a result of humanism) is eventually challenged by iatrochemical (Paracelsian) and iatromechanical views emphasizing therapeutics and curative drugs. These views are, by the end of this diachronic survey, countered by a return to a dietetics again based on hygiene and prevention. With this foundation established, subsequent chapters explore the interaction of these ideas with changing views of social rank, religion, vegetarianism, beverage consumption, and the appearance of new foods and drinks associated with the Columbian exchange. It would be difficult to imagine any undergraduate student, irrespective of major, who could leave unsated from this intellectual feast. Summing Up: Essential. All levels/libraries.” -CHOICE

“An excellent book! Well-written, it has a logical structure and strong arguments. Its particular strengths are the European perspective, the careful analysis of discourses, the many and telling quotations, and the systematic attention to regional and social differences. This book is an eminent and original contribution to food historiography.” ―Peter Scholliers, Professor of History and FOST (Social & Cultural Food Studies), Vrije Universiteit Brussel, Belgium

“David Gentilcore had the happy idea of combining two topics that are usually studied separately, the history of medicine and the history of food. Basing his work on the rich literature of advice on a healthy diet, Gentilcore compares the food anxieties of early modern times with our own but contrasts the recommendations, noting the rejection of fish, fruit and vegetables as 'dangerously cold and moist'. The result is a valuable contribution to both the intellectual and the social history of early modern Europe.” ―Peter Burke, Emeritus Professor of Cultural History, University of Cambridge, UK

“The current proliferation of dietary advice makes David Gentilcore's witty and learned book especially welcome. He reminds us that we moderns have no monopoly on the application of diet to health; doctors and patients have agreed and disagreed about what to eat (and drink) for generations. But notions of what constituted health, and what foods promoted it, have changed drastically, with regional and religious factors also playing roles. With his deep understanding of both food and medicine, Gentilcore is the ideal guide through an era when too much fruit might kill you, and even children drank alcohol every day.” ―Anita Guerrini, Professor of History, Oregon State University, USA

“Advice about food and drink has always been fundamental to medicine, but European tastes rapidly changed in response to the development of global trade and new ideas. Gentilcore captures those transformations wonderfully in this wide-ranging book, highlighting not only the novelties and curiosities but the enduring legacies of food culture in a period that fundamentally shaped European stomachs, palates, and health.” ―Harold J. Cook, John F. Nickoll Professor of History, Brown University, USA

Dog Songs: Poems, by Mary Oliver

A New York Times bestselling collection of new and favorite poems,
celebrating the dogs that have enriched the poet’s world

Mary Oliver's Dog Songs is a celebration of the special bond between human and dog, as understood through the poet's relationship to the canines that have accompanied her daily walks, warmed her home, and inspired her work. Oliver's poems begin in the small everyday moments familiar to all dog lovers, but through her extraordinary vision these observations become higher meditations on the world and our place in it.

Dog Songs includes visits with old friends, like Oliver's beloved Percy, and introduces still others in poems of love and laughter, heartbreak and grief. Throughout, the many dogs of Oliver's life emerge as fellow travelers and as guides, uniquely able to open our eyes to the lessons of the moment and the joys of nature and connection.

Review
The New York Times
“Dog Songs... is a sweet golden retriever of a book that curls up with the reader.”

The Boston Globe
“Oliver… is one of our most adored poets, and a longtime lover of dogs. The popularity of [Dog Songs] feels as inevitable and welcome as a wagging tail upon homecoming.”

Oprah.com

“Mary Oliver is a canine lover par excellence. Her combo of woman’s best friend and poetry is utterly irresistible.”

The Rumpus

“Mary Oliver’s Dog Songs is, plainly put, a lovely and accessible book of poems.”

Time Out

“Oliver’s capacity for simple ecstasy in response to the natural world remains. The new Dog Songs turns… material about canines into something meaningful.”

Bust Magazine

“The set of poems all feature dogs, a species much beloved by the poet; she writes of her canine companions with as much awe and reverence as she does other miraculous beasts and natural phenomena. They read as embodiments of the natural order, comprehending the cycle of life and death in ways no human can.”

Brain Pickings:

“Dog Songs collects her most soul-stirring poems and short prose celebrating that special human-canine relationship and what it reveals about the meaning of our own lives — a beautiful manifestation of Oliver’s singular sieve for extracting from the particularities of the poetic subject the philosophical universalities of the human condition to illuminate what it means to live a good life, a full life, a life of purpose and presence.”

Bookish, The Houston Chronicle:

“The collection invites us to linger awhile in the pure happiness Oliver feels toward dogs, most notably, her beloved dog Percy… For Oliver, nature is our teacher and dogs some of the best professors.”

The Bark

“Renowned for her love of nature, Ms. Oliver writes exquisite, lyrical poems that… remind the reader of how much there is to love in this world. Nowhere is this love more evident than in Oliver’s latest collection, Dog Songs… These poems will make you smile, laugh, cry and nod your head in delighted agreement.”

FIRST TIME PERCY CAME BACK

The first time Percy came back
he was not sailing on a cloud.
He was loping along the sand as though
he had come a great way.
“Percy,” I cried out, and reached to him—

those white curls—
but he was unreachable. As music
is present yet you can’t touch it.
“Yes, it’s all different,” he said.
“You’re going to be very surprised.”
But I wasn’t thinking of that. I only
wanted to hold him. “Listen,” he said.
“I miss that too.
And now you’ll be telling stories

of my coming back
and they won’t be false, and they won’t be true,
but they’ll be real.”
And. then, as he used to, he said, “Let’s go!”
And we walked down the beach together.

Woof & Words: A Master Muse on Dog's, Impermance, Love, and Loss
By Bill Gallagher
My wife lovvvvves dogs--and not just our dog (though he gets special royalty status)--AND Mary Oliver. So when I bumped into this book, I knew I had to get it for her right away. And she's delighted with the book. Even I (also a lover of dogs--though less appreciative of poetry) was charmed--and more important--touched by MO's words and the poems in this slim volume (which include both previously published and new works).

Mary Oliver is actually one of the few poets who does move me--and obviously I'm not alone. Probably some experts and academics will scoff, but to me she has both a delicacy and down-to-earth quality that offer grace so even someone like myself, who might be a bit tone deaf to the mystery and romance of more obscure works, really sees/listens (

The Endless Search for Absolute Kime: Karate Budo, by Gilles Lavigne

Gilles Lavigne Kyoshi has been practicing Karate since he was 13 years old. His forty-three continuous years of experience in the Martial Arts has given him a unique perspective on the basics and higher principles of Karate. These principles he shares have been taught to him by some celebrated and acclaimed Japanese, Canadian and American Masters. He currently holds an 8th Dan black belt in Karate Shotokan and is the founder and head of the Canadian Martial Arts Association. He also has a black belt in Chito Ryu style of Karate. Lavigne Kyoshi states that Karate-do is a catch phrase that describes a self-actualization process. He asserts that the Karate life consists of awakening consciousness or awareness at different stages in our lives on the Physical, Mental, and Spiritual dimensions. It has been his observation that self-actualization processes in the Martial Arts, Tai Chi, Yoga and countless others far too many to mention, have been created to help followers gradually peel away at the different internal and external layers of their make-up to uncover his unique ‘Self’. The objective of this book as he points out is to guide karate-kas towards a continuous flow of awakening consciousness and awareness on all levels of their being. One must have clarity of perception in order to have pure intention. Pure intention is the guiding principle to live a virtuous and honorable life. The book is intended to be as kind of a road map, a guide along a trek and journey through a process of bringing together energies from all levels of our being to this focal point of pure intention in time and space. This process is called Kime.

Independent Politics: How American Disdain for Parties Leads to Political Inaction, by Samara Klar, Yanna Krupnikov

The number of independent voters in America increases each year, yet they remain misunderstood by both media and academics. Media describe independents as pivotal for electoral outcomes. Political scientists conclude that independents are merely 'undercover partisans': people who secretly hold partisan beliefs and are thus politically inconsequential. Both the pundits and the political scientists are wrong, argue the authors. They show that many Americans are becoming embarrassed of their political party. They deny to pollsters, party activists, friends, and even themselves, their true partisanship, instead choosing to go 'undercover' as independents. Independent Politics demonstrates that people intentionally mask their partisan preferences in social situations. Most importantly, breaking with decades of previous research, it argues that independents are highly politically consequential. The same motivations that lead people to identify as independent also diminish their willingness to engage in the types of political action that sustain the grassroots movements of American politics.

Review
"Despite being aware of the existence of closeted partisans for quite some time, we know next to nothing about them: who they are, what motivates them to go undercover, the political and psychological conditions that increase their numbers, and how this affects American democracy. In Independent Politics, Klar and Krupnikov provide a fascinating and timely analysis of the psychological underpinnings of closeted partisanship. Using a combination of clever experiments and observational studies, the authors convincingly demonstrate that political disagreement leads many Americans - in particular those who are strongly attuned to social norms - to take a dim view of political parties, partisanship, and partisans. The political consequences of their analysis for democratic citizenship and political representation are far-reaching."
Howard Lavine, University of Minnesota

"The political science literature contains numerous claims about independents, most of which rest on a very thin bed of evidence. This book tells us as much about today's independents as the extant literature combined. It is a must-read for anyone interested in American public opinion and elections."
Morris Fiorina, Stanford University, California

"Klar and Krupnikov show, through a series of clever experiments, that although independents may vote like partisans, their disdain for parties leads them to go 'undercover', and avoid all manner of expressive political behaviors. Independent Politics is a fascinating read that makes a significant contribution to the subfields of political participation and political psychology. It will drive scholars to think about the decision to identify as independent in heretofore unrecognized ways."
Joanne Miller, University of Minnesota

"Klar and Krupnikov show that avoiding partisanship is a meaningful decision that has important implications for civic engagement. Using a variety of convincing tests, Independent Politics is a major work that will undoubtedly shape future research on partisan politics in the United States."
Stephen P. Nicholson, University of California, Merced

Principles of Neural Design (MIT Press), by Peter Sterling, Simon Laughlin

Neuroscience research has exploded, with more than fifty thousand neuroscientists applying increasingly advanced methods. A mountain of new facts and mechanisms has emerged. And yet a principled framework to organize this knowledge has been missing. In this book, Peter Sterling and Simon Laughlin, two leading neuroscientists, strive to fill this gap, outlining a set of organizing principles to explain the whys of neural design that allow the brain to compute so efficiently.

Setting out to "reverse engineer" the brain -- disassembling it to understand it -- Sterling and Laughlin first consider why an animal should need a brain, tracing computational abilities from bacterium to protozoan to worm. They examine bigger brains and the advantages of "anticipatory regulation"; identify constraints on neural design and the need to "nanofy"; and demonstrate the routes to efficiency in an integrated molecular system, phototransduction. They show that the principles of neural design at finer scales and lower levels apply at larger scales and higher levels; describe neural wiring efficiency; and discuss learning as a principle of biological design that includes "save only what is needed."

Sterling and Laughlin avoid speculation about how the brain might work and endeavor to make sense of what is already known. Their distinctive contribution is to gather a coherent set of basic rules and exemplify them across spatial and functional scales.

Review

Time, space, energy, and information: these are the key themes of this fascinating book, which takes the spirit of the Feynman Lectures on Physics and applies it to explain how the brain has been designed, by evolution, to process information efficiently. Unique insights, recounted in the authors' characteristically appealing style, are to be found on every page.

(David Attwell, Jodrell Professor of Physiology, University College London)

This is not your typical neuroscience textbook. Rather than catalogue processes and structures of the central nervous system, Sterling and Laughlin take a unique approach to interpreting the brain. They consider the general principles that have shaped brain design through natural selection, principles that make the human brain 10^5 times more efficient than the most powerful computers. Chapters examine efficient encoding of information, layout of brain circuits, and strategies for learning and memory. This overview of brain function is refreshing and insightful.

(Eric A. Newman, Distinguished McKnight University Professor of Neuroscience, University of Minnesota)

Drawing on their areas of expertise, Sterling and Laughlin have written a beautiful book addressing some simple questions about how the brain works, enriching the reader with many 'aha' moments. This transformative book brings us closer to understanding the logic that nature could be using in its design of neural circuits. And, in fact, perhaps the biggest impression from reading the book is a renewed awe for the incredible work that nature has done with nervous systems, which must be the crowning achievement of evolution. I cannot wait to use it as textbook in my course on neural circuits.

(Rafael Yuste, Professor of Biological Sciences, Columbia University)

The authors have been thinking deeply about the issues discussed and it shows, the neurobiology is right up-to-date, and the writing is artful, clear, and engaging. This book is a wonderful start for what will, I believe, become the standard way for conceptualizing neurobiology.

(Charles F. Stevens Current Biology)

Breathtaking vista
By P. Nelson
I have read a lot of neuroscience books that are heavy on "What" and "How," that is, the mind-blowing anatomy and physiology of the brain. Truly a lot is known, and one can spend a lifetime on just these aspects. But few authors dare, or are qualified, to weigh in on "Why" things are as they are. Perhaps they are afraid of being thrown into the bin of teleologists and scorned. Certainly these are dangerous waters, with so many just-so stories about how things must be as they are.

Sterling and Laughlin have the technical chops to do better. To pack that staggering computational power into a few kilograms, with power dissipation of a just a hundred watts, evolution has had to find and exploit a lot of tricks. Evolution is often portrayed as doing a lot of things at random because it just happened to stumble upon a good-enough kludge here and there. The authors make the case that in contrast, the demands on neural performance are so severe that truly optimal design wins. They lay out a handful of principles, then take us on a tour showing how those principles play out in the same way across many scales, many sensory and processing modalities, and even many species, as diverse as human and fly. Along the way, they also introduce the reader to many amazing organisms (the star-nosed mole!) and equally amazing abilities that even humans possess (single-photon sensitivity!), so every chapter is filled with revelations.

By the end, the authors do not shy from explaining how their viewpoint, painstakingly obtained by looking at specifics, also illuminates the human condition, and by this point, the reader has earned these insights. There is really no other book with these ambitions combined with such expertise and global view.

Conquering Data Mountain
By Dr. James V Stone
This book is both ambitious and courageous. It is ambitious because it seeks to extract general principles from the accumulating mountain of data about brain function, and it is courageous because the principles discovered are not expressed only in the imprecise realm of mere words. Instead, Sterling and Laughlin interpret physiological findings from a wide range of organisms in terms of a single unifying framework: Shannon’s mathematical theory of information, in which information is a well-defined quantity measured in bits.

From the outset, Sterling and Laughlin make it quite plain that this not a book of speculation about brains, but it is a book which shows how definite facts can be used extract general principles of brain function. In the search for these general principles, Sterling and Laughlin cast their investigative net wide, covering sensory and motor systems in species which represent a diverse range of evolutionary experiments.

By comparing these systems in the bacterium Escherichia coli, the single celled Paramecium caudatum, the nematode worm Caenorhabditis elegans, the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster, and a variety of mammals (including humans), the authors show that:

1) even though the biochemical or neuronal signalling systems vary greatly within each species according to the particular demands placed on each sensory system (e.g. vision versus olfaction),

2) the processing within each type of sensory system (e.g. vision) is similar when considered across different species.

For example, they show that the information processing steps in neural networks that support vision are different from those that support audition within the human brain, but the information processing steps in neural networks that support vision in humans are very similar to those that support vision in flies.

Rather than noting this as an intriguing evolutionary coincidence, Sterling and Laughlin ar- gue convincingly that these findings are the result of an interaction between universal physical constraints and species-specific constraints on information processing. These constraints dictate that the energy cost of each additional bit of information rises extremely steeply, resulting in rapidly diminishing informational returns on each extra Joule of energy expended. And because energy cost translates fairly directly into Darwinian fitness, the importance of these constraints is self-evidently paramount.

The principles discovered are made clear at the outset, and these principles are re-discovered many times within the book as different species and sensory systems are examined. In this regard, the book resembles Darwin’s great work, On the Origin of Species. Sterling and Laughlin do not just propose a vague but plausible idea in the hope that others might believe it. They propose a series of testable hypotheses (principles), formulated in mathematically precise language, and support them with a detailed analysis of hard evidence drawn from a virtual archipelago of diverse sources. This book deserves to have an enormous impact on neuroscience (and the various ’brain sciences’), because (in the best traditions of science) it provides a framework for condensing mountains of physiological data into a neat theoretical (information-shaped) molehill.

Sterling and Laughlin do not claim that the set of 10 principles they discover are either complete nor infallible, but they make a convincing case that these principles deserve to be taken seriously. These principles are not listed here because they require substantial context for their worth to be appreciated. The fact that the principles cannot be stated in isolation reflects the authors’ ability to simplify, but not to over-simplify, what is essentially a complex problem.

Like most books on the brain, this one explains how particular mechanisms execute particular functions, but, unlike most books, it also makes frequent use of the word "why". According to Sterling and Laughlin, it is not enough (for example) to understand the physical mechanisms which tells us how a photon changes the voltage of a photoreceptor by some amount. A complete theory of vision should also tell us why the mechanism is the way it is, why its voltage changed by that amount, and why not twice nor half that amount.

This emphasis on why the brain operates as it does has a strong tradition uniquely associated with the computational approach to brain function espoused in books by Marr (Vision, 1981), Rieke et al (Spikes, 1997), Land and Nilsson (Animal Eyes, 2003), Dayan and Abbott (Theoretical Neuroscience, 2005), Bialek (Biophysics: Searching for Principles, 2012). So the approach is not new, but it is rarely adopted, nor expressed as cogently as it is in this book; a book which will still be read long after books which describe only how neurophysiological mechanisms work have been forgotten.

Whilst the authors’ ambition is laudable, some aspects of the execution could be better. This book relies critically on the reader having a firm grasp of Shannon’s formal definition of information. Even though a few pages are dedicated to this, a tutorial account would allow less numerate readers to appreciate the many results which depend on understanding information theory. On a similar note, certain key technical terms are not explained (e.g. Nyquist limit, Fourier transform, and point spread function). Addressing these problems would have greatly improved the book’s accessibility. Having said that, the effort involved in researching topics via Google (as readers are enjoined to do in the Preface) would be well rewarded with a clearer understanding of the book.

In conclusion, the authors clearly believe neuroscience suffers from two related problems: too much data and too little theory. They claim that, “the best we can do with Data Mountain really is just to set a few pitons up the south face”. But I think they have achieved much more than this. Sterling and Laughlin have firmly established a base camp, and have hewn a path which will allow scientists of sufficient skill and fortitude to conquer Data Mountain.

New context for neuroscience topics
By Amazon Customer
I like this book a lot. "Academic" neuroscience books all cover the same set of subjects and usually from similar perspectives. By putting traditional neuroscience topics in a unique context, this book give you the opportunity to cover these topics in a new way, reinforcing what you've already learned while giving you new insight to some of them.
