John Wilson is a bereavement counsellor and trainer at St Catherine's Hospice, Scarborough, UK. He has many years' experience as a counsellor and trainer, and has been using the materials in this book to train bereavement counsellors for several years. He is currently studying for a PhD, researching how bereaved clients make use of counselling.

Linda Lau Anusasananann was recipe editor and food writer for Sunset Magazine for 34 years. She also served as a special consultant to cookbooks such as Sunset Chinese, Sunset Oriental, Sunset Wok, Sunset Seafood, and Sunset Pasta. She was the president of the Association of Chinese Cooking Teachers and president of the San Francisco Chapter of Les Dames d’Escoffier. A history lesson on my people + food

This rating is short of 5 stars due to the lack of pictures. I think this book would be taken to the next level if there were drool-worthy pictures in it. I do love the way this is written, from a historical perspective of the Han and Hakka peoples. My mom and her siblings are the last ones in our family to speak and understand Hakka, let alone cook amazing, hearty Hakka food. I bought this book to cherish some of the recipes that I ate growing up as a child. Highly recommend!

Not many non Chinese are aware of this group of who my MOM called
the gypsies of China. Both of us are 100% Chinese born in Panama. From
this background comes a few personal opinions. I found the book very
Informative and educational about the Chinese diaspora in which my grandparents
took part at the turn of the century. I enjoyed ambling down memory lane
as I read over the recipes and seeing my Mom once again cooking in her
kitchen and explaining it all to me with a little family history thrown in. Did I say,
My mom's father was Hakka and he taught Polo to cook his favorite dishes.

Solid well written Chinese cookbook and a compelling read

I learned Chinese cooking in different regions of China over a 20 period while I was doing business there. I mostly cook from a sheet of notes that I've acquired over that time & I only have a couple Chinese cookbooks.

This is a very solid reference manual for people trying to learn basic homestyle Chinese cooking. The Hakka style of cooking is a distinct and separate cuisine from the other six or seven and that I am most familiar with in China and the three or four available in the United States.

What's more, is Hakka cooking is just plain fun and simple. If you are trying to learn to cook Chinese food, this would be a good introduction to food that you have never had on your table before that will really impress your friends. The lack of photographs of the finished dishes is the reason I only gave it 4 stars, because this would make it more difficult for beginning cooks to use. however, if you have been to enough Chinese restaurants you have an idea how it is supposed to look , and anyway, Hakka cuisine is not big on presentation.

The author does a great job off bringing you along with her family's journey from China into the United States at the turn of the last century and discovering different variations of Hakka cuisine from many different parts of the world.

The book in that fashion, is similar to Patricia Dunlop's book on Sichuan cooking "The Land of Plenty" and is a great read in this respect.

black folktales

The book I am reviewing is called Black Folktales, it is by Julius Lester and illustrated by Tom Feelings. This book falls under the category folktales and fairytales. Before I tell you more about the book let me say that the illustrations were amazing. Anyways, the book consisted of short stories about blacks in the south. There were stories about blacks on plantations and about god and how he created the world. Most of the stories were very good and interesting and most of them I enjoyed reading although there were a few mediocre stories mixed in too. The writers writing style I thought was very good. It definitely kept me entertained through out the whole book. There were some very funny stories in the book. there was one about a black man that was feared through out the land, and was supposed to die a couple of times but he kept escaping death, until St. Peter told god that this black man was supposed to have died thirty years ago. God immediately called the grim reaper who started complaining cause he hadn't gotten more the five minutes of sleep in the last two days. He started telling god that he needed some assistants, or else. Anyways I give this book 4 out of 5 stars.

Short, but excellent collection

This is a good overview of Black Folklore for the novice of the genre, a teaching tool, or for people who just enjoy good stories.

Julius Lester, one of the few living public specialists of tales of this type, begins with a few African stories to show the root of this field. From there, he goes to stories of pre-and post slavery America.

He includes some time honored classics of Black Folklore. "High John The Conqueror," of a slave who outwits his master, was a favorite of my Dad that I have also seen elsewhere as "Big Sixteen" and "Old John" is a welcome addition to this set. In fact I used to regale my friends with this story when I was 12. Read it and you'll see why. Also, the "Bad man" legend of "Stagolee" spieces things up a bit (a forerunner of the type of tales found in gagster rap, minus the vulgarity) and the slave classic "People Who Could Fly," which was first known to be collected along the Charleston (SC) sea islands in the 1920s.

Unfortuantely, most of these tales are not told anymore except by professional storytellers. Additionally, many books that tended to contain such stories in the early 1900s when such tales were still often told were so laden with dialect (Joel Chandler Harris, Ambrose Gonzales, et. al.) that they are often incomprehenbsible to the modern reader. Many kudos to Mr. Lester for keeping this wonderful art form alive.

PS, Mr. Lester inquired of the source of the last story in the book. I recall reading it in Zora Neale Hurston's "Mules & Men" (1935). Hope this helps.

These tales--told in "street talk"--will be liked by some, not by others; are humorous to some, not to others. Ones most anyone would enjoy are: "Why Apes Look Like People," "Why Men Have to Work," "How the Snake Got His Rattles," and "High John the Conqueror."

Underwhelming

I loved the first two in this series. They had some editorial flaws and were rough around the edges, but I liked the story. This one was not nearly as good. It didn't seem like anything really happened in the plot, and the action that did occur was forced. There wasn't proper character or plot development. It's also clear that this book's main purpose was to provide character development and transition into the next book in the series. I read the whole thing for the sake of the first two, but this book doesn't make me very excited for the next one in the series...

Things are getting tense in Chardonia

I've read all the books in this series, and loved them. This was no exception. Politically things are getting tense between Chardonia and the surrounding countries, and we get to see this world from the perspective of a woman who was raised in a very different society. Now she's frustrated and struggling to help the people she loves find freedom.

Fantastic read. Definitely a great next book, and I'm really looking forward to another.

Love & the struggle for freedom

After the third book all these characters have become family...you feel their pain, rejoice their joys, which are few and far between. What more can these poor people in Chardonia go through...

This book is Waverly's ... Her struggles in helping the people Chardonia, and her would be love. And when it comes to her love one should remember hate is not the opposite of love, but indifference is.

As I said love the characters, they're believable. I love the storyline and it kept my interest.

How all the characters have grown since Mine To Tarnish, book 1 of the series. The strength of the ladies are amazing, considering they're treated worse than pets (and has anyone notice there's no cats and dogs in the books).

Spoiler would let you know how the do with the rebellion & what happens with Waverly's and her love....and not everyone makes it out of this book alive and there's a lot of things left to figure out.

And if took three books but Serena & the girls' mom has a name.

Nate Shaw's father was born under slavery. Nate Shaw was born into a bondage that was only a little gentler. At the age of nine, he was picking cotton for thirty-five cents an hour. At the age of forty-seven, he faced down a crowd of white deputies who had come to confiscate a neighbor's crop. His defiance cost him twelve years in prison. This triumphant autobiography, assembled from the eighty-four-year-old Shaw's oral reminiscences, is the plain-spoken story of an "over-average" man who witnessed wrenching changes in the lives of Southern black people -- and whose unassuming courage helped bring those changes about.

As noted by others, one of the best autobiographical memoirs ever published

I cannot state my praise for this book too highly. Theodore Rosengarten did us all such a great service when he took the time to spend with Nate Shaw and record his voluminous recollections of his life as a tenant farmer in the state of
Alabama during the 20th century. We might wonder why it has taken our great nation so long to embrace and manifest the promises made in our Constitution and Bill of Rights to each and every one of our citizens. This volume does a wonderful, although sobering, job, of explaining the way envy and jealousy each play a crucial role in keeping our fellow citizens down. Envy, Shaw explains, affects the actions of his neighbors of color, and jealousy, his neighbors of pallor. Let us each and every one truly pledge never to withhold the benefits of equal access to education and the fundamentals of property rights to our neighbor, regardless of our opinions of his/her religious belief, pallor or orientation.

Absolutely amazing

I love reading history. Not necessarily so much the big picture stuff - kings, queens, huge wars kind of thing. But history from below. The lived experience of people impacted by the big stuff and how they react. All God's Dangers is that kind of book at its best. In this book we see this on the ground experience of Black people in the south from the end of the civil war into half of the 20th century. I had family who told of events in this same kind of way. Not a straight-forward narrative, but all of the detours were stories in themselves.

So clearly American history. Told by such a good man.

Seriously, my people.... read this book. Be patient, and listen to the story-telling as it was intended to be heard. You will be so glad that you did.

Story of a Strong Man

An inspiring book about hard work, character, wisdom, courage, resistance and accomplishment in the face of extreme poverty and racism in Alabama in the first half of the twentieth century.. "Nate Shaw" (not his real name, author changed from Ned Cobb to protect Cobb while he was alive) was a real American hero. His father was born into slavery, and Cobb was illiterate and impoverished. Most Americans have no concept of hard physical work of the kind Mr. Cobb did from childhood until death, the roadblocks put in his path, and how he fed and protected his wife and children. This is a story that deserves a mass audience.
