Fantastic Novella Addition to The Steampunk Chronicles
By Lovemuffins
I enjoyed this little novella so much more than The Dark Discovery of Jack Dandy, mostly because I felt like this really was a novella rather than just being a tease for the other books in the series.

However, if you haven't been reading the Steampunk Chronicles then you definitely need to pick them up before reading this or you're going to be incredibly confused. If you have been reading them, you're definitely going to want to pick this up because it's going to give you all sorts of insight into Jasper, Cat and a couple other plot points going on in the other books. And omgoodness is this a fantastic little addition to the series!

Everything that went down between Jasper and Mei in The Clockwork Collar had my heart aching for him, but I really liked Cat and I was hoping that the two of them would get together... now they're finally getting a THIRD chance after it hasn't worked out for them twice - the question is, are they willing to put their hearts on the line after having them broken twice before? Ms. Cross packed quite a bit of information / plot into this little novella, making it move quickly and concisely. It whetted my appetite for more of her writing as well as making me incredibly happy to see Jasper again and get to see more of him and Cat together =) That hottie cowboy deserved some breaks!

Not a Wild Adventure more a Romance
By Nicole @ The Reading Rebel
Wildcat, Jasper's ex is back and in London looking for her sister, who ran off with a lord who lives there. I really wanted to know what Jasper was doing when he was M.I.A. in The Girl with the Iron Touch and was happy the author wrote a novella to tell us where he was. I loved Cat in the second book and loved her even more in this one. You get insight about Jasper and Cat's feelings for each other in this book and more about their failed relationship which I also was thrilled to learn about. Overall I really liked it but it wasn't as good as the other 2 novellas.

Just okay
By Amy
Well... I don't actually remember much of the story. Granted it's been a month since I read it. But it obviously didn't make much of an impact. I read it when I was reading through the whole series, and I do remember that it explained something that happened in one of the novels. If you're reading the series and really enjoying the full-length novels, you may enjoy it, but I wouldn't recommend it outside of that context. It's okay, but not compelling enough to stand alone.

The Railway Journey: The Industrialization of Time and Space in the Nineteenth Century, by Wolfgang Schivelbusch

The impact of constant technological change upon our perception of the world is so pervasive as to have become a commonplace of modern society. But this was not always the case; as Wolfgang Schivelbusch points out in this fascinating study, our adaptation to technological change—the development of our modern, industrialized consciousness—was very much a learned behavior. In The Railway Journey, Schivelbusch examines the origins of this industrialized consciousness by exploring the reaction in the nineteenth century to the first dramatic avatar of technological change, the railroad.

In a highly original and engaging fashion, Schivelbusch discusses the ways in which our perceptions of distance, time, autonomy, speed, and risk were altered by railway travel. As a history of the surprising ways in which technology and culture interact, this book covers a wide range of topics, including the changing perception of landscapes, the death of conversation while traveling, the problematic nature of the railway compartment, the space of glass architecture, the pathology of the railway journey, industrial fatigue and the history of shock, and the railroad and the city.

Belonging to a distinguished European tradition of critical sociology best exemplified by the work of Georg Simmel and Walter Benjamin, The Railway Journey is anchored in rich empirical data and full of striking insights about railway travel, the industrial revolution, and technological change. Now updated with a new preface,The Railway Journey is an invaluable resource for readers interested in nineteenth-century culture and technology and the prehistory of modern media and digitalization.

Amazon.com Review
Because it made possible rapid movement and shipping across large distances, joining far-off towns to economic and cultural capitals, many people who lived in the early 19th century regarded the railroad as an instrument of progress. Because anyone with the price of a ticket could board a train, regardless of social class, the railroad was also seen as a democratizing technology.

But, Wolfgang Schivelbusch notes in this vivid history of early rail travel, the promise of progress and democracy was swiftly compromised. The railroads became an agency for the concentration of wealth in a few hands, and they created a class of passive consumers who simply got aboard and waited to arrive at their destinations. The railroads, Schivelbusch writes, changed the 19th-century world for good and ill. They helped rewrite the industrializing world's sense of time, for now precise schedules had to be kept; they reinforced a sense of forward-plunging movement into the future; they even introduced the reality of mass disaster, for railroads were always crashing, sometimes taking hundreds of riders to their deaths.

Delving into urban planning, psychology, architecture, and economics, as well as the history of technology, Schivelbusch paints a revealing portrait of the role of the railroad in shaping the 19th-century mind. --Gregory McNamee

Review
This delightful, probing, and very quirky book is, surprisingly, a pioneering work in the sociology and psychopathology of the railway revolution. . . Whats more, its a gas. -- The Village Voice

Superb book that demonstrates how railroads and industrialization changed Western culture
By Sage Ross
The Railway Journey is a straightforward but deceptively sophisticated work of social/cultural history that chronicles the rise of train travel and the effect this had on perceptions of space, time, travel, commerce, and ultimately 'modernity' (though the author avoids that loaded term). Schivelbusch draws mainly from primary sources and presents arguments about how significantly train travel affect the consciousness of 19th century travelers, and how the effects differed in America and Europe. The strength of the book lies in Schivelbusch's mastery of the details; the reader discovers exactly why British rails were straight while American rails curved around the landscape... the answers are rooted firmly in the economic differences between the two nations. And you learn about how the imprints of class structure differed for British and American train passengers, because British train cars evolved from stagecoaches while American train cars emulated river steamships.

The goal of so many histories of science and technology is to show the connections between the physical, technical world of scientists and engineers and the broader cultural world, and how the connections run both ways. Of course it is usually easy to show how science and technology change culture, but much harder to show profound influences of culture on science and technology. But Schivelbusch does just that, and does so with crisp writing and very clear evidence; his conclusions are often profound, yet it is very hard to take issue with the connections he makes.

Another reviewer recommends Kern's Culture of Time and Space over this book; while Kern takes a much broader view of the connections between culture and science, his work is so loosely constructed that it is hard to take his overreaching conclusions seriously. In particularly, Kern has a very thin understanding of the history of science (especially regarding the technical details), which frequently undermines his narrative. The Railway Journey is far more satisfying; it is a model of how cultural history of science can be done without ignoring the actual history of actual science.

Fascinating study of the cultural repercussions of new technologies
By John H. Teeple
Recently I've developed a taste for cultural histories that examine the influence of new technologies on the perception of nature, space, time, individuality (etc., etc.) The railroad is a prime example of a technology that, once adopted, profoundly altered how people perceived and interacted with their world. (And, in a very real sense, created a new world.) The railroad 'collapsed' space and time, opened up new lands to settlement (and new resources to exploitation), and inaugurated a new era of technologically-mediated experiences of nature.

Wolfgang Schivelbusch's book is not only a good, concise history of the railroad (focusing on England and the United States), but a pioneering study in the cultural impacts of new technologies. It's a bit old, and in places shows its age, but is an excellent place to start for readers who share my interest in the culture/technology interface. What is particularly valuable is the realization that many of the cultural shifts associated with 'postmodernity' today (particularly 'time-space compression') are in fact rooted in such eminently modernist achievements as the railroad and (contemporaneously) the telegraph.

Also valuable is Schivelbusch's discussion of resistance to the railroad. While early promoters had the idea of reorganizing transportation (of both goods and people) through a widespread adoption of rail, there were just as many - and just as vocal - dissenters. Opponents of this new technology were concerned that it would further isolate people from nature. The relentless motion of the train displaced the feelings of fatigue and physical exertion that come with long-distance travel; the speed of the train turned landscape into simply passing scenery. (In other words: the same arguments that people had and continue to have about the cultural impacts of the automobile were already taking place nearly 200 years ago!)

To continue a thread of discussion in these reviews, I suggest that a book like this (and Schivelbusch's other excellent work on technology: "Disenchanted Night: The Industrialization of Light in the Nineteenth Century") be read alongside broader histories like Stephen Kern's "The Culture of Time and Space", and more focused studies of technology like David Landes' "Revolution in Time." The weakness and strength of Schivelbusch's study, when read along with these other works, is its conciseness. Schivelbusch does not delve very deeply into concurrent technologies; nor does he make broad generalizations or indulge in speculation (however warranted that may be). Instead he culls nuggets of insight from original sources and provides enough interpretation to whet the reader's appetite - perhaps for their own researches.

Well written, well argued, and a quick read.

an excellent survey of the impact of railway travel
By J. Henderson
In the last few decades historians --following sociologists such as Durkheim-- have turned their attention to the ways in which new technologies have altered people's experience of space and time. Schivelbusch's small piece is a pretty good (but light-weight) example of this genre. He reveals some interesting trivia along the way: he tells, for example, how padded upolstery was invented to assuage the fears of first-class passengers brought about by the roughness of new speed; he shows that compartment design in passenger cars reflect the contrasting social values of Europe and America. But he is at his most interesting when describing the ways in which the railroad created new conceptual forms of geographical distance by obliterating the spaces in between destinations. Furthermore, by creating the need for standardized time-tables, railways nurtured a standardized/homogenized conception of time. Local idiocyncracies became less important. Doubtless true national identities could never have emerged without revolutions in transportation and communications. A book that takes these ideas much further is Stephen Kern's excellent work "The Culture of Time and Space." If this genre interests you, Kern's book is an important read.

Balanced and Thorough Overview -
By Loyd Eskildson
Pre-statehood, Zionist leaders employed many of the same terrorist tactics as did the Palestinians later - attacking Arab markets and assassinating opponents. Most Israeli historians say the massacres were conducted by 'rogue elements' within the Jewish forces. After independence, the Israelis launched preemptive raids against neighboring Arab states, hoping to foment hostilities against their Jews, who would then emigrate to Israel. Israel has pursued bilateral negotiations with individual Arab countries that would allow it to secure regional peace w/o making concessions to the Palestinians, while the Arab countries generally insisted otherwise. Another Israeli tactic has been to delay negotiations to give itself time to integrate territories through aggressive settlement expansion.

In May, 1964, 422 Palestinian delegates declared: 'The partition of Palestine in 1947 and the establishment of the State of Israel are entirely illegal, regardless of the passage of time, because they were contrary to the will of the Palestinian people and to their natural right in their homeland, and inconsistent with the principles embodied in the Charter of the United nations, particularly the right to self-determination.'

Israel seized the West Bank and Gaza from Jordan and Egypt in 1967. Upon seizing the territories, the Israeli government placed the two underground water sources under its own control, and severely restricted Palestinian water use; while Israelis consumed water at a 5X rate of the Palestinians, many of the latter's farms went out of production for lack of water. From the very beginning, the Palestinians made it clear they did not want to live under occupation. Resistance was muted first, due to Israel's policy of avoiding settlement buildings in populated areas and the prosperity that filtered into the territories from Palestinian workers in Israel and the Gulf States. With the Likud government of 1977, settlement building was both vastly expanded and shifted to the heavily populated areas of the West Bank within easy commuting distance of Israeli cities. The unstated plan was to use the settlements and the bypass roads connecting them to Israel to divide Palestinian populations areas into disconnected cantons, making it politically difficult for any future Israeli administration to abandon the territories. Then, the collapse of international oil prices in the early 1980s ended the economic boom in the Middle East as well, and dissatisfaction and anger among Palestinians grew apace, as did Israeli repression.

Eventually, an elaborate security apparatus was set up in which officers of Israeli security forces, utilizing a network of Palestinian informants, were given virtually total jurisdiction over security matters. When things got out of hand, Palestinian resisters could be detained without trial, under emergency legislation passed by the British decades earlier. Leaders were also deported, and violent political offenders saw their families' houses destroyed and orchards cut down. With the Intifada, this kind of summary justice was meted out on a massive scale, along with public humiliations, beatings and shootings of demonstrators. Thousands were detained for months and even years without trail, and report of torture periodically emerged from Israeli jails in the territories.

Redeployment of Israeli troops out of most populated Palestinian areas, following the Oslo, Taba and Hebron Accords of 1993, 95, and 97, eased the level of repression. In May 1994, Palestinian police moved into most Palestinian villages, towns and cities. Under pressure from Israel, however, the Palestinian security forces became too intrusive, large, and repressive - employing many of the same tactics used by the Israelis, including the use of secret security courts for political crimes and press censorship. While the Labor government of the 1990s ostensibly called a halt to construction of new settlements, existing ones were allowed to expand.

Israel's Jordan River diversion project of the early 1960s was the catalyst for Nasser's creation of the PLO and one of the causes of the 1967 war. A major reason for the Jordan-Israel peace treaty of 1994 involved King Hussein's desire to initiate a binational canal system to deliver and desalinate water from the Red Sea.

After the 1967 war (created over 400,000 refugees) and Israel annexed East Jerusalem and a large amount of surrounding territory (ignoring UN resolutions), the PLO set up a base in Jordan, and after a battle with the IDF Arafat claimed victory and was proclaimed a hero. In 1970 they hijacked four airliners and after removing the passengers, blew one up. The PLO was then expelled from Jordan and settled in Jordan. Israeli athletes were seized at the Munich Olympics in 1972, and the PLO began launching rocket and guerrilla attacks against civilians in northern Israel. In 1978 the new Likud government invaded after another attack. The invasion caused over 2,000 deaths and created 250,000 refugees. Israel invaded again in 1982, justifying it by the attempted assassination of its ambassador in London by a renegade guerrilla leader whom the PLO had condemned for killing its own guerillas. The IDF entered Beirut, resulting in heavy losses for both sides. Then the IDF permitted the Christian Phalangist militia to enter refugee camps in West Beirut to wipe out nests of PLO guerrillas - massacring over 1,200 Palestinian civilians. Israelis and the world were outraged - an inquiry faulted virtually every official in the Israeli government from Begin on down and concluded that IDF officers knew from the beginning what was happening and failed to intervene.

Orthodox Israelis saw the West Bank and East Jerusalem as the heartland of ancient Hebrew kingdoms. After the Israelis controlled those territories Zionism's political strength grew considerably and they undertook a mission of settling the West Bank. Settlers would move onto a site under cover of darkness and set up trailers on a hill overlooking an Arab village. The IDF would then remove the settlers by force, creating a political windfall for the movement. Through land seizures, confusing regulations and subsidies to Israeli businessmen and farmers, Israel's government undermined the local economy and created a captive market for Israeli products that were largely uncompetitive on the world market. Large numbers of Palestinian workers provided cheap labor for Israeli firms - paid far less than Jewish or even Palestinian Israelis, while paying taxes and receiving virtually no benefits.

Standards of living rose for Palestinians, but also for Jordanians and Syrians, and much was the result of remittances from Palestinians working in the oil states. Those leaving also eliminated those the Israeli's feared the most as potential leaders. The Israelis seized about two-thirds of the land on the West Bank and nearly one-third in Gaza.

The Intifada (1987-92) caught virtually everyone by surprise. Previously, Israel had seized the East Jerusalem Electric Company, the largest Arab enterprise in the territories, and Sharon had moved into the Muslim quarter of Old Jerusalem. Then a traffic accident was interpreted by Palestinians as revenge for an Israeli just murdered in a Gaza market. Massive protests ensued. Thousands were jailed without trial, adding further fuel. The self-delusion that the occupation was benevolent and the status quo could continue indefinitely was shattered.

The Boundary Element Method, by L. C. Wrobel

The boundary element method (BEM) is a modern numerical technique which has enjoyed increasing popularity over the last two decades, and is now an established alternative to traditional computational methods of engineering analysis. The main advantage of the BEM is its unique ability to provide a complete solution in terms of boundary values only, with substantial savings in modelling effort.

This two-volume book set is designed to provide the readers with a comprehensive and up-to-date account of the boundary element method and its application to solving engineering problems. Each volume is a self-contained book including a substantial amount of material not previously covered by other text books on the subject. Volume 1 covers applications to heat transfer, acoustics, electrochemistry and fluid mechanics problems, while volume 2 concentrates on solids and structures, describing applications to elasticity, plasticity, elastodynamics, fracture mechanics and contact analysis. The early chapters are designed as a teaching text for final year undergraduate courses. Both volumes reflect the experience of the authors over a period of more than twenty years of boundary element research.

This volume, Applications in Thermo-Fluids and Acoustics, provides a comprehensive presentation of the BEM from fundamentals to advanced engineering applications and encompasses:
* Steady and transient heat transfer

* Potential and viscous fluid flows

* Frequency and time-domain acoustics

* Corrosion and other electrochemical problems.
A unique feature of this book is an in-depth presentation of BEM formulations in all the above fields, including detailed discussions of the basic theory, numerical algorithms and practical engineering applications of the method.

Written by an internationally recognised authority in the field, this is essential reading for postgraduates, researchers and practitioners in civil, mechanical and chemical engineering and applied mathematics.

An excellent book on a very difficult topic
By Guilherme
If all books on BEM were like this field would be much easier. It may not contain a clear explanation about programming the method, but the background theory is very well explained.

A definite must have for schools and families.
By Mr. Chad J. Mitchell
As I have said previously, I am a sales rep for a major book publisher so I see a lot of books. I am certainly not afraid to tell you when my company sends out what I call a stinker. On the otherhand if we publish one I really like, I do not have a problem telling a school or library that they have to have a book.

This is a book that they should all have. It will appeal to students on a social level. It is wonderful teaching tool for teachers and parents alike. It does a wonderful job of being consistent on the rhyming text. Plus, it is just a real great story with really great pictures.

I ultimately judge a children's book by how often my child pulls the book out of the bookcase for me to read, and I can truly say that this is a book my two year old grabs almost every night.

Revolutionary monkeys, UNITE!
By Jason Kirkfield
Echoing both Sombertown (from the stop motion classic Santa Claus Is Comin to Town) as well as Fritz Lang's Metropolis (1927), Drabsville is a gray town filled with sad inhabitants.

Into this cold, unhappy world walks a suspiciously happy, guitar-playing, vest-wearing hippie named Chutney. Actually, much of the story follows the plot from First Blood. Like Rambo, Chutney finds an enemy of authority (the mayor, to Rambo's Sheriff Teasle) and is unfairly thrown into prison. The *seed* that Chutney illegally brings into Drabsville could easily be seen as allegorical marijuana. "Destroy that nasty weed!"

Upon his release, and with the mayor temporarily out of town, Chutney incites the masses. Surely another influence at this point was Reagan's "Tear down this wall!" speech. We see formerly morose chimps painting their homes pink(!) and turning the palace into a fruity playground. Nor is it a stretch to see the kiddie rocket ship as a decommissioned weapon of mass destruction.

Chutney soon has the entire town's population dancing in the streets. Everyone is eating copious quantities of food, no one is working anymore. Drabsville (now renamed Happytown, in the classic revolutionary tradition) has gone from dystopia to utopia.

Having successfully turned the guards against their master, Chutney has *him* thrown into jail. With the mayor under lock and key, Chutney completes the coup d'tat by assuming the mayoral post. He lets the former mayor out of jail but only to rub his nose in the new world order. Power to the people! Or at least to the chimpanzees.

This children's book packs some heavy messages into its colorful pages. For children conditioned to equating chimps with Curious George, they may not pick up on every facet of the story without parental assistance. How much you clue them in is up to you.

Scholastic paperback (February 2007)

Tricky Territory
By Gary Carter
It is a tricky thing to try to teach kids that authority is not always right and sometimes you have to stand up to it. This book strikes a perfect balance, with the main character being punished for doing something beautiful and for the common good but technically against the rules. When he ultimately wins out (with the help of some young chimps), rather than punishing the person who jailed him, he teaches him the error of his ways. A very thoughtful book, but one that won't be over the heads of the intended audience.

All Things New: American Communes and Utopian Movements, 1860-1914, by Robert S. Fogarty

From the seventeenth to the twentieth centuries America has been both a haven for utopian dreamers and a fertile ground for experiments in community. Closely examining the decades from the Civil War to World War I, Robert S. Fogarty provides the first comprehensive study of a neglected chapter in the history of American utopian and communal experiments. Countering the view that utopianism declined dramatically after the 1840s , Fogarty uncovers a wealth of utopian experiments across the United States from 1860 to 1914. He examines some 125 communities and their leaders, ranging from the secular and entreprenurial to the charismatic and mystical. These engrossing tales of communes gain both authority and vitality from his exhaustive research in primary sources, including newspapers, journals, and letters and from the inclusion of historic photographs of colonists and prophets. Fogarty's arguments reflect recurrent cultural forces in American history, as he defines new territory in the history of utopian and communal movements. This trenchant work, accompanied by its new foreword, offers a fresh perspective on the persistent theme of defining community and self.

Review
In this book Robert Fogarty, a distinguished student of American communal groups, offers a rich series of narrative tours of an important, yet neglected, era in our communal history. Reading these pages is like watching clusters of undulating historical mirrors. At times the actors and actresses reflect fascinating but distroted images of their period. Then, from a slightly different angle, we see that the images can teach us much about how Americans were reacting to some confusing transformations that still affect us today. (Kenneth Roemer, University of Texas, Arlington)

About the Author
Robert S. Fogarty is professor of history at Antioch College and editor of the The Antioch Review. A leading authority on American communes, he is the author of Dictionary of American Communal and Utopian History and The Righteous Remnant: The House of David, and the editor of The American Utopian Adventure (a nineteen-volume series).

Linear Control Theory: Structure, Robustness, and Optimization (Automation and Control Engineering), by Shankar P. Bhattacharyya, Aniruddh

Successfully classroom-tested at the graduate level, Linear Control Theory: Structure, Robustness, and Optimization covers three major areas of control engineering (PID control, robust control, and optimal control). It provides balanced coverage of elegant mathematical theory and useful engineering-oriented results.

The first part of the book develops results relating to the design of PID and first-order controllers for continuous and discrete-time linear systems with possible delays. The second section deals with the robust stability and performance of systems under parametric and unstructured uncertainty. This section describes several elegant and sharp results, such as Kharitonov’s theorem and its extensions, the edge theorem, and the mapping theorem. Focusing on the optimal control of linear systems, the third part discusses the standard theories of the linear quadratic regulator, Hinfinity and l1 optimal control, and associated results.

Written by recognized leaders in the field, this book explains how control theory can be applied to the design of real-world systems. It shows that the techniques of three term controllers, along with the results on robust and optimal control, are invaluable to developing and solving research problems in many areas of engineering.

About the Author
South African pastor and author Andrew Murray (1828—1917) was an amazingly prolific writer. Murray began writing on the Christian life for his congregation as an extension of his local pastoral work, but he became internationally known for his books, such as With Christ in the School of Prayer and Abide in Christ, that searched men's hearts and brought them into a deep relationship with Christ. Writing with an intensity of purpose and zeal for the message of the gospel, Murray wrote numerous books even after his "retirement" at age seventy eight.

a life changing must read!!!
By Lisa
This book has been of great inspiration for me...The book came sent to my house of which I did'nt order. I also kept hearing this word of intercession, but was unsure of it's meaning. This book helped me dramatically in my spirtual life , along with the holy spirits guidance. This book was also passed to 4 other readers and one couple who's life was changed dramatically. If you haven't read this book and you have a desire to have a deeper relationship with God, and have questions on prayer, I suggest picking it up...

Classic Reading From Murray
By Seeking Disciple
Andrew Murray's books are classics. Very few I have read by this man of God are bad books and most are very simple to read with short chapters.
This book on intercessory prayer is one of his best. I found that this is a great book to read before bed since the chapters are short. This book offers biblical insight into intercessory prayer and unlike many books written today on intercessory prayer, Murray offers many Scriptural insights to back up his chapters on prayer.
Murray was a great missionary to Africa and was a man who lived this book. This book will challange your prayer life and will give you the desire to touch the heavens for this earth.

Review
Praise for Prior Editions

“For almost thirty years, I have depended on Cleveland and Bunton's textbook as the anchor of my course on the history of the modern Middle East. It is, to my mind, the very best and most teachable text available.”
—Lidwien Kapteijns, Kendall/Hodder Professor of History, Wellesley College

“One of the most balanced and comprehensive textbooks that exists on Middle Eastern history.”
—Sreemati Mitter, Brown University

“Cleveland and Bunton provide a comprehensive history of the Middle East that allows students to understand the decisions of the principal political actors and the results of major events and crises. It has been an indispensable textbook for my survey on how and why the peoples of the Middle East deal with issues of democracy, religious and national identity as well as conflicting reactions toward Western intervention in a variety of forms.”
—Stacy E. Holden, Purdue University

“This book provides a comprehensive and compelling history of the modern Middle East and is an invaluable addition to any scholar's library. The authors distill complex and multifaceted aspects of Middle Eastern history and culture for the reader while providing insightful and germane analysis.”
—Ellen R. Wald, Jacksonville University

“Cleveland has put his recognized expertise on Arab nationalism and modern Islamic movements to particularly good use in this learned, sensitive, and highly readable account of the past two centuries of Middle Eastern history. The formidable task of combining thematic with country-by-country treatment is accomplished remarkably well.”
—Donald M. Reid, Georgia State University

“With the accuracy and balance that the scholar would insist on and with the spirited readability that the student would hope for, this is a fine interpretive study of the Middle East during the past two centuries. A richly textured history, it handles the challenge of highlighting the cultural unity characterizing the Middle East while also demonstrating the region's diversity-political, religious, cultural, and economic.”
—L. Carl Brown, Princeton University

“Cleveland has written a cogent and comprehensive political history of the Middle East in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, prefaced by a concise and readable introduction to Islamic history. He is particularly successful in pointing to the persistence and strength of traditional modes of thought and belief in bringing about the reassertion of Islamic identity in the face of the moral bankruptcy of contemporary Middle Eastern regimes and the disempowering pressures of everyday life…. this book should do much to demystify common misconceptions about this complex and frequently misunderstood region.”
—Peter Sluglett, Durham University

“A solid, well-written, and well-packed introductory text that will be easily accessible to inductees into modern Middle Eastern history…. Careful readers of Cleveland's text will discover that in a quiet and persuasive manner the author challenges many popularly held beliefs and (mis)perceptions.”
—International Journal of Middle East Studies

“Impressive political history…. Provides a brief but useful exposition of Islam and what the faithful believe is expected of them.”
—New York Times Book Review

“The book masterfully intertwines complex strands of history — from sectarian conflict in Lebanon to the Arab-Israeli conflicts, to the impact of oil wealth and the Iranian revolution. No other volume does this so well.”
—Elizabeth Thompson, History, University of Virginia

“Highly recommended for anyone interested in a remarkably well-crafted introduction to the history, politics, and international relations of the Middle East.”
—International Journal

“Lucidly written, well researched and an ideal work of introduction and reference for students of the region.”
—Middle Eastern Studies

“This survey of the history of the modern Middle East has been well received by scholars in the field. Sophisticated and stimulating…. Cleveland has contributed a well-balanced, well-researched, and well-planned introductory text for the study of the modern Middle East.”
—Judith Mendelsohn Rood, Turkish Studies Association Bulletin

“The difficulties of writing an introductory text on the modern Middle East have largely been overcome by William Cleveland in this lucid and impartial history. Perhaps the greatest virtue of the book is the author's sympathetic detachment in his treatment of an ideologically charged history. Always measured in his assessments, Cleveland avoids lionizing and vilifying whether discussing the colonial experience, the rise of nationalism, the struggle for Palestine, the influence of Nasser or the Islamic resurgence.”
—Eugene Rogan, British Journal of Middle Eastern Studies

“Cleveland's timely book is now the most comprehensive, up-to-date introduction to the history of the modern Middle East, and it is likely to remain so for a good long while. He does a marvelous job of rendering intelligible the complex political and social changes that the Middle East experienced in the past two centuries. Readers will be grateful to Cleveland for blending much of the best recent historical scholarship into this fine book and for making it eminently readable.”
—Philip S. Khoury, Massachusetts Institute of Technology

“An excellent overview of the history of the modern Middle East. Eminently clear, comprehensive, and insightful. A truly superior book.”
—James Jankowski, University of Colorado

“This volume is history in the best sense. … A superbly written analysis of the social and political disruptions of the Middle East. This updated volume does an excellent job of weaving together various strands of a complex subject in a coherent narrative. It is recommended reading for all serious students who want to understand how the Middle East got to where it is today.”
—Phebe Marr, author of The Modern History of Iraq and fellow at the U.S. Institute for Peace

“This is the best comprehensive survey of modern Middle East history in the literature. The authors excel at translating complex and controversial subject matter in a highly readable manner without sacrificing cogent and insightful analysis. I highly recommend it.”
—David W. Lesch, professor of Middle East History, Trinity University

“This excellent survey has been used in many colleges and universities as a standard text since its first edition…In this particularly turbulent period of history, this book should be of interest not only to students, but also to every citizen who has to make some judgment, one way or another, about the US role in the Middle East.”
—Choice

The kindle version leaves a little something to be desired
By Mandy B.
I purchased the kindle version of this book as part of the required reading for a History class I am taking. The book is well-written and informative. There have been many times that I have used this book as the main source for papers and discussion assignments. It gives a comprehensive history of the Middle East, including the roles of Islam, interference and support from the West and East, and how the countries we know today came into existence. The only reason I did not give the book 5 stars is because the kindle version does not have page numbers. If I were reading this book for my own enjoyment, this would not have been a problem, but because I needed this book for a class, it was difficult to quote the book as a source with no page numbers. I had to use the Index a lot to count back or forward to the page I needed. The Index is also cut off, so the first two words or so of each entry are cut off, which makes is difficult to find the topic for which I am searching. Other than these formatting issues, the book would have received 5 stars.
